INTRODUCTION
“A woman is the full circle; within her is the power to create,
nurture and transform”
-Diane Marie child

The role of women in modern India can be termed as

phenomenal. Their transition from the past to their current status
is worth mentioning. Jawaharlal Nehru very well said that. "You
can tell the condition of anation by looking at the status of its
women.“

In the distant past, women's role was confined to childbearing

and nurturing them. As a part of that role , women have
traditionally been involved in preparation of food, collecting
water. Gathering fuel for cooking and making objects needed by
a family, such as home decor items , recycling of products and
clothing .
After independence ,many important developments took place in
education. An Increasing number of girls and women went into
secondary and higher education bringing a major change in society.
They became aware of their rights and demanded their due status.

Family Structure
Its Effect on Women's Role
Earlier, families in India consisted of a set of grand parents and
their children, their spouse sand their grandchildren, in other words,
three generations of one family lived under the same roof .

Women played a subordinate role. As a home-maker, she was expected

to do the duties assigned to her. She cannot have a say in family matters.
Joint family system was best suited to anagrarian society
where mobility was limited ,specialization was simple and
custom immutable. But following a process of changes.
with the ushering in of the age of technological
advancement , changing gender role and better
employment opportunities, interdependence in large
families have given way to independent living and an
attitude of self-sufficiency. This has led to a decline in the
joint family system.

With this, there was a change in the role of women

Nuclear setup allows-for no demarcation, the man is no
longer the sole bread earner are women no longer mere
caretaker of the house. The financial security which was
provided by the joint family was no longer . available and
the cost of living was increasing hence, need for extra
The Woman expanded her domain from socials and domestic front
to professional fields. This transformation Was mainly because of
education. The enlightened and educated women are no longer
working just for easing the financial constraints of their families but
also To establish their own identify and to excel in their work areas
by taking on the challenges vis-a-vis their male counter parts

Today's women have changed the way world looks at them. They are
well educated and are Into different professions. They manage
teams, show leadership qualities fully during crises.

EFFECT OF CHANGING ROLE OF
WOMEN ON BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Business environment is the sum total all of individuals, institutions
and other forces that are outside the control of a business enterprise but
may effect all its performance.
A proper study of changes that may occur in the different forces of
business environment should be made by the business .

This enables the business managers to not only identify and evaluate but
also to react to the forces external to business .

The changing role of women comes under social environment. When the
women entered the work force, a feeling of financial independence
followed. The family structure changed. The business environment could
not remain unaffected due to this social change.
The effect of this social change brought many changes such
as:

1)Changing demand for electrical appliances and gadgets: The

increasing incomes have led to an increase demand for consumer goods
such as refrigerators, television sets, microwave ovens, cooking ranges .
washing machines, vacuum cleaners and other home appliances.

2)Changing Fashion Industry Trends: There shift in the tastes and

preferences of women regarding clothes. From traditional Indian wear ,
the preference has shifted to more formal and universally acceptable
wear

The working women demand smart , quick wearable and durable

wardrobe . Fashion industry is constantly working to cater to the
changing tastes of the women. They want clothes which are more
comfortable to carry and are elegant to wear.
3)Demand for Cosmetics: With every passing year, the
range of cosmetics , personal care and beauty products in
the country has widened. The desire for leading a better
life and the opportunities provided by money and exposure
to media worldwide have opened possibilities for Indian
women to adopt a lifestyle which includes glamour, fame
and beauty as far as possible.

4) Changing food habits : With an increase in the number

of workingwomen with different food habits , there is a
drastic change in the food industry as well. The companies
are coming 'Up with packed and convenient food to save
the working women from the hassles of the kitchen chores .
Various companies are coming up with convenient food
options such as Ready to eat and serve food. More tiffin
Family outings have become a norm because this is the
time when the whole family gets a chance to spend time
together . Women have got a breather as a result of all
these changes.

5) Demand Of Vehicles: With a large number of women

joining the work force, several companies have come up
with the options to cater to their needs for vehicles.

Electric scooty , scooter without gear , small cars which are

easy to park and drive are coming into market focusing
this segment. Special feature such as GPS for vehicle
tracking is an added attraction.

Some other effects of the presence of women in force are as

 The awareness about the need of women’s safety is
also coming up. Delhi Metro has reserved the first
compartment of the metro for ladies only.

 Delhi metro has reserved the first compartment of the

metro for ladies only.

 An app for android phones ‘click on’ has been

development that immediately dials the number of two
of yours nearest and dearest ones while sending e-
mails to another two. A map providing locations will
also be a part of the e-mails.

 The media is now much more vibrant, reporting and

responding to each and every news/change happening
CONCLUSION
The above study reversals that there is a major social change
in India . The corresponding infrastructure needs to be
developed to a level compatible with the culture of a
working women. This would involve establishment of
crèches. Day care centre and similar support system which
will give women an opportunity to change their lifestyle and
adapt to new challenges.

They have to shed the shackle which have kept them bound
to the hearth. A women is not an isolated entity but an
infinitesimal part of longer whole. Thus, a change in women
would suffice.
Abdul Kalam's words can be quoted here. “When women are
empowered, society will stability gets assured.”

An empowered women changes a life, strengthens the family

and promises hope to a generation. She is a force that shapes a
country. Though much has been done the metamorphosis is
still going.

“True beauty in women is reflected in her soul”
