SOLVING SYSTEMS OF

LINEAR EQUATIONS
BY ALGEBRAICALLY
(elimination method)
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #1
3x – 4y = 12
2x + 4y = 3
STEP ONE: Since the numerical coefficient of y are additive
inverse, simply add the equations.
3x – 4y = 12
2x – 4y = 3
5x = 15 (one variable is eliminated)

STEP TWO: Solve the equation.

5x = 15
5 5
x=3
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #1
3x – 4y = 12
2x + 4y = 3
STEP THREE: Solve for the value of the other variable.
2x + 4y = 3
2(3)+ 4y = 3
6 + 4y = 3
4y = 3 – 6
4y = – 3
y = - 3/4
STEP4: Checking for the Solution: {(3, -3/4)}
Eq.1 Eq. 2
3x – 4y = 12 2x + 4y = 3
3(3) – 4 ( -3/4) = 12 2(3) + 4(- 3/4) = 3
9 + 3 = 12 6-3 =3
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #2
x + 2y = 33
x – y = -6
STEP ONE: Find a way to get an opposite value of a variable to
eliminate it. Multiply Eq. 2 with negative one (-1).
x + 2y = 33
-1(x – y = - 6)

STEP TWO: Add the two Equations.

x + 2y = 33
-x +y = 6

3y = 39
y=3
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #2
x + 2y = 33
x – y = -6
STEP THREE: Substitute the variable and Solve for the
value of the other variable.
x – y = -6
x –13=-6
x=-6+13
x=7
STEP4: Checking for the Solution: {(7, 13)}
Eq.1 Eq. 2
x - y = -6 x + 2y = 33
7 - 13 = -6 7 + 2(13) = 33
-6 = -6 7 + 26 = 33
33 = 33
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #2
4x -y = 9
x -4y = 6
STEP ONE: Find The Opposite Value of a Variable to Eliminate it.
-4(4x -y = 9)
x -4y = 6

STEP TWO: Add the two Equations.

-16x +4y = -36)
x -4y = 6

-15x = -30
x= 2
ELIMINATION METHOD
Example #2
4x -y = 9
x -4y = 6
STEP THREE: Substitute the variable and Solve for the
value of the other variable.
x -4y = 6
(2)-4y = 6
-4y= 6 -2
-4y = 4
y= -1
STEP4: Checking for the Solution: {(2, -1)}
Eq.1 Eq. 2
4(2)- (-1) = 9     x - 4y = 6
          8+1=9 (2)-4(-1)= 6
              9=9              6=6
