    The ancient Olympic Games were held in Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The modern Olympic Games were first organized in 1896 in Athens by the International Olympic Committee. Women did not participate in the first modern Olympics, but did compete in some sports like tennis and golf starting in 1900. The first Winter Olympics took place in 1924 in Chamonix, France. The Olympics did not occur in 1940 or 1944 due to World War II.
