EQUATIONS

(Algebra)
1.The equation
(24x²+25x−47)/(ax−2) =−8x−3−[53/(ax−2)]
is true for all values of x≠2/a, where a is a constant.

What is the value of a?

A) -16
B) -3
C) 3
D) 16
Correct answer:B

ANSWER EXPLANATION: There are two ways to solve this question. The faster
way is to multiply each side of the given equation by ax−2 (so you can get rid
of the fraction). When you multiply each side by ax−2, you should have:

24x²+25x−47=(−8x−3)(ax−2)−53

You should then multiply (−8x−3) and (ax−2) using FOIL.

24x²+25x−47=−8ax²−3ax+16x+6−53

Then, reduce on the right side of the equation

24x²+25x−47=−8ax²−3ax+16x−47

Since the coefficients of the x2-term have to be equal on both sides of the
equation, −8a=24, or a=−3.

The other option which is longer and more tedious is to attempt to plug in all
of the answer choices for a and see which answer choice makes both sides of
the equation equal.

The final answer is B

2.If p and q are the roots of the equation x² – bx + c = 0, then what is the
equation if the roots are (pq + p + q) and (pq – p – q)?

(1) x²– 2cx + (c² – b²) = 0

(2) x²– 2bx + (b²+ c²) = 0
(3) Bcx²– 2(b+c)x + c² = 0
(4) x²+ 2bx – (c²– b²) = 0
Correct answer: (A)
In the given quadratic equation x²– bx + c = 0,
The sum of the roots p + q = b --- (1)
And the product of the roots pq = c --- (2)

We have to formulate a quadratic equation whose roots are (pq + p + q) and (pq – p – q).

The sum of the two roots = pq + p +q + pq – p – q = 2pq

But from eqn (2), we know that pq = c
Therefore, the sum of the roots = 2c

The product of the roots = (pq + p + q)(pq – p – q)= (pq)² – (p+q) ²

From equation (1) and (2), we know that pq = c and p + q = b
Therefore, the product of the roots = c²– b²

We know the sum of the roots and the product of the roots.
Therefore, the quadratic equation is x² – (sum of the roots)x + product of the roots = 0

=> x²– 2cx + c²– b²= 0

3.If x = 1 + √2 + √3, then the value of (2x⁴– 8x³+ 26x – 28) is
A) 2√2
B) 3√3
C) 5√5
D) 6√6
Correct Option: D
x = 1 + √2 + √3
⇒ x – 1 = √3 + √2
On squaring both sides ,
x²– 2x + 1 = 3 + 2 + 2√6
⇒ x²– 2x + 1 – 5 = 2√6
⇒ x² – 2x – 4 = 2√6
On squaring again,
(x² – 2x – 4)² = (2√6)²
⇒ x⁴+ 4x²+ 16 – 4x³ + 16x – 8x² = 24
⇒ x⁴– 4x³– 4x²+ 16x – 8x² – 8 = 0
⇒ 2x⁴– 8x³ – 8x²+ 32x – 16 = 0
∴ 2x⁴– 8x³– 5x²+ 32x – 16 + 3x² – 6x – 12
= 0 + 3 (x²– 2x – 4) = 3 × 2√6
Required answer = 6√6
4.The third proportional of the following numbers (x – y)², (x² – y²)² is :
A) (x + y)³ (x – y)²
B) (x + y)4 (x – y)²
C) (x + y)² (x – y)²
D) (x + y)² (x–y)³
E) None of these
Correct Option: B
If c be the third proportional between a and b, then

a/b=b/c

⇒ a³ +1/a³+ 3 × 3 = 27

⇒ c =b²/a={(x² - y²)²}²/(x – y)²

={(x + y)}4/(x – y)²

= (x + y)4 (x – y)²
5.Sum of the factors of 4b²c² – (b² + c² – a²)² is :
A) a + b + c
B) 2(a + b + c)
C) 0
D) 1
Correct Option: B
4b²c² – (b² + c² – a²)²
= (2bc)² – (b² + c² – a²)²
= (2bc + b² + c² –a²) (2bc – b² – c² + a²)
= {(b + c)² – a²} {a² – (b² + c² – 2bc)}
= (b + c + a) (b + c – a) {a² – (b–c)²}
= (b + c + a) (b + c – a) (a + b – c) (a – b + c)
∴ Required sum
=b+c+a+b+c–a+a+b–c+a–b+c
= 2 (a + b + c)
6.What will be the angle between the lines y – x – 7 = 0 and √3y – x + 6 = 0 ?

A)Θ = tan–1(2 + √3)

B) θ = tan–1(2 - √3)
C) θ = tan–1(1 + √3)
D) θ = tan–1(1 - √3)
Correct Option: B
We know that angle between the lines is
tanθ =|(m1 + m2) /√1 + m1m2|
Here, Equation of line is y – x – 7 = 0
⇒ m1 = 1
similarly,
m2 =1/√3
Now,
Tanθ = (2 - √3)
θ = tan–1(2 - √3)
7.If x = ³√ a + √a² + b³ + ³√a - √a² + b³ , then x³ + 3bx is equal to

A) 0
B) a
C) 2a
D) 1
Correct Option: C

X = ³√ a + √a² + b³ + ³√a - √a² + b³

Cubing both sides,
x³ = (³√ a + √a² + b³)³ + (³√a - √a² + b³)³ + (³√ a + √a² + b³)
(³√a - √a² + b³)(³√ a + √a² + b³ + ³√a - √a² + b³)
= a + √a² + b³ + a - √a² + b³ + 3 (a + √a² + b³ × a - √a² + b³)¹/3x
= 2a + 3(a² - a² - b³)¹/3x
= 2a + ( - 3bx)
∴ x³ + 3bx = 2a
8.If p : q = r : s = t : u = 2 : 3, then (mp + nr + ot) : (mq + ns + ou) equals :
A) 3 : 2
B) 2 : 3
C) 1 : 3
D) 1 : 2
Correct answer:B
9.The angle between the graph of the linear equation 239x – 239y
+ 5 = 0 and the x – axis is

A) 0°
B) 60°
C) 30°
D) 45°
Correct Option: D
Putting y = 0 in the equation 239x – 239y + 5 = 0
⇒ x =- 5/239
∴ Co-ordinates of A = 0,-5/239
Again putting x = 0 in the equation 239x – 239y + 5 = 0, – 239y = – 5
⇒ y =5/239
∴ Co-ordinates of B =0 ,5/239

∴ OA = OB =5/239
∴ ∠OAB = ∠OBA = 45°
because ∠AOB = 90°
10.If 5x + 9y = 5 and 125x³ + 729y³ = 120 then the vlaue of the product of x and y is
A) 1/9
B) 1/135
C) 45
D) 135
Correct Option: B
5x + 9y = 5
On cubing both sides, (5x)³ + (9y)³ + 3 × 5x × 9y (5x
+ 9y) = (5)³
[∵ (a + b)³ = a³ + b³ + 3ab (a + b)]
⇒ 125x³ + 729y³ + 135xy × 5 = 125
⇒ 120 + 135 × 5xy = 125
⇒ 135 × 5xy = 125 – 120 = 5
XY=(5)/(135×5)
=>1/135
