NETWORKS AND ELECTRONIC

Lecture 8
Slide 1.2

Computer network
 A collection of autonomous computers interconnected by a single
technology. Two computers are said to be interconnected if they are able
to exchange information. The connection can be via a copper wire; fiber
optics, microwaves, infrared, and communication satellites can also be
used.
 Use of Computer Networks:
1. Resource sharing
2. Sharing information
3. Powerful communication mediu
4. doing business electronically 5. Electronic commerce
Slide 1.3

Type of network
 Classification of Networks by Scope:
1- LAN (Local Area Network): physical distance between the hosts is
within a few kilometers
2- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): MANs cover distances of up to
a few hundred kilometers and are used for interconnecting hosts spread
across a city.
3-WAN (Wide Area Network): used to connect hosts spread across a
country, a continent, or the globe.

Type of network
 Classification of Networks by components:

1-Peer to Peer Network 2- Server Based Network

Slide 1.5

Type of network
 Classification by Access restrictions:
1. Private networks : Most networks are for the private use of the
organizations
2. Public networks : on the other hand, are generally accessible to the
average user, but may require registration and payment of
connection fees. Internet is the most-widely known
Slide 1.6

The physical components of networks

1. Network Cards
2. Modem
3. Hub, Bridges, switch
4. Cables
5. Device
Slide 1.7

The global network (Internet):

 It is an abbreviation for the phrase (International Network), and it is a
network that connects the world to each other as a small village using
computers or communication devices that are configured with
computers, and this network provides many services.
 World Wide Web
Slide 1.8

Internet features and benefits:

 E-Commerce.
 News.
 E-mail.
 Conversation.
 Programs.
 Research / Education / Culture
Slide 1.9

Network Benefits:
1. Sharing information among network users.
2. Sharing devices.
3. Participate in programs.
4. Information protection.
5. E-mail.
Slide 1.10

Factors affecting negatively on the

networks:
1. The large number of customers (users) entering the computer
network leads to slow network.

2. Difficulty discovering network errors or faults, especially if the

malfunction is in one of the physical network components.

3. Cutting or bending wires (cables) will disrupt the network.
