ODIA LITERATURE
The stone inscription of Ananta Varma Bajrahasta Deva
dating back to 1051 AD is considered as the first manifestation
of Odia script and language.
Odia language has sailed through five eras namely- Old Odia
Era (7th to 12th century), Early Middle Odia (1300-1500),
Middle Odia (1500-1700), Late Middle Odia (1700-1850) and
Modern Odia (1850 till present day).
The first Odia printing typeset was cast up fully functionally in
1836 by Christian Missionaries. The first full-length Odia
novel, Padmamali by Umesh Chandra Sarkar, was published
by the Cuttack Printing Company in October 1888.
Fakiramohan Senapati played a significant role in establishing
the distinct identity of odia. He is regarded as the father of
Odia nationalism and modern Odia literature.
FAKIR MOHAN
SENAPATI
He was born on January 14, 1843
He is regarded as the father of Odia nationalism
and modern Odia literature.
He dedicated his life to the progress of the Odia
language in the later 19th and early 20th centuries.
He was a social reformer and educator who used his
pen to criticize and correct the aberrations
prevalent in society.
He is called the father of Odia fiction. He is
popularly known as ‘ Vyasakabi’ in Odisha.
CONTRIBUTION
• Fakir Mohan’s first original poem was ‘ Utkala Bhramanam’,
written in 1892.
• His other original poems published are Puspamala, Upahar,
Puja Phula, Prarthana, and Dhuli.
• Fakir Mohan Senapati translated single-handedly the whole of
the ‘ Ramayana’ and the ‘ Mahabharat’.
• The three novels, Chhamana Atha Guntha, Mamun, and
Prayaschita explore the realities of social life in its multiple
dimensions.
• ‘Lachman’ is a historical romance dealing with the anarchical
conditions of Odisha in the wake of Maratha invasions during
the eighteenth century.
• He has written quite a few memorable short stories such as
‘Rebati’ and ‘Patent Medicine’.
• Fakir Mohan is also the writer of the first autobiography in
Odia, ‘Atma Jeevan Charita’.
MADHUSUDAN
RAO
• He was born on 29 January 1853 in Puri, Odisha.
• He had his schooling from different parts of Odisha
- Gop, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Puri and he
completed F. A. from Ravenshaw College in 1871.
• In 1890, he became Deputy Inspector of Education.
• He is known as Bhaktakavi of Odia and is
considered the father of modern Odia poetry.
• He was a poet, philosopher and idealist, and role
model for millions.
• He died at the age of 59 on 28th December 1912.
CONTRIBUTION
• Every Odia begins education with the book named
Barnabodha, written by him.
• His other books such as Sishubodha, Balabodha, Sahitya
Kusum, and Prabandhamala, etc laid a foundation stone of all
the Odia workbooks.
• He published Many magazines like “Sikhyabandhu”, “Asha”,
‘Utkal Sahitya”, “Utkal Darpan”.
• Chhandamala, Sangitamala, Basanta Gatha, Kusumanjali, and
Utkalgatha. Prabandhamala are some of his collection of
essays in Odia.
• He translated the Uttararamacarita of Bhavabhuti into Odia.
PRATIBHA
SATPATHY
• She was born on January 18, 1945
• She completed her M.A, Ph.D in Odia language.
• She is recognised as a leading poet of odia
language. Her poetry expresses the deep human
sensibility in lucid form while attempting to
explore the mystery of human relationship with
man and beyond.
• She was editing one leading Odia Magazine '
ISTAHAAR' for last 25 year's now edit poetry
quaterly 'UDBHASA‘
• She has also successfully taken up literary
critisism and translations. Praticipated in a
number of literary con ferences and symposia at
national and international level.
CONTRIBUTION
• Over 45 books written by Pratibha, have been published in
different Indian languages. The books include poetry, literary
criticism, features, memoirs and translation.
• She got the prestigious Central Sahitya Akademi Award for
her book of poetry Tanmaya Dhuli,(The Enchanted Dust) in
2001. This book which has been translated into fifteen Indian
languages depicts the transcendence of human spirit.
• Her poetry book Jaba Kusum Sankasham revolves around the
mysticism that life offers on earth. There has been empathy
for trees, animals, birds and even for insects in her poems.
• Her book of memoirs Shaishaba ru Samsara (From Childhood
to Life) has been very popular and gained much appreciation
from readers and critics for portrayal of hitherto hidden truth
about women’s lives.
• Her other famous poems include Ama Kavita, Grasta Samaya,
Sahada Sundari, Nimishe Akshara and many more.
