Chapter 1 Answer Key
Chapter 1 Answer Key
Input: It is the process of entering data and instructions into computer system.
Input is performed by input devices like keyboard, mouse, scanner, digital camera
and microphone etc.
Process : It is the process of performing arithmetic and logical operations on data
to convert them into useful information. Processing is performed by CPU- Central
Processing Unit. CPU is also called Processor. It is the brain of computer.
Storage : It is the process of saving data and instructions to make them available
as and when required in future. Data and programs are stored on permanent storage
devices, especially on hard disk. Other permanent storage media include CD -
Compact Disk, DVD - Digital Video Disk and Zip Disk etc.
Output: It is the process of producing useful information after processing data,
b) The important characterstics of computer are
i) Speed ii) Accuracy iii) Diligence iv) Versatility v) Storage capacity
vi) Automatic vii) Reliable
i) Speed : Computers work at a very high speed. They are much faster than
humans.
A computer can perform billions of calculations in a second. Computer
speed is measured in Mega Hertz (MHz).
ii) Accuracy : Accuracy means the capability to provide results without any
errors.
Computer can process large amounts of data and produce 100%
accurate results.
iii) Versatility: A computer can perform different types of tasks. We can
use a
computer in educational institute, in hospital, bank or at home.
computers are being used in banks industry, medical, science and
engineering fields.
c) The main weakness of computer are given below:
1) Zero IQ : since the computer is a dump machine with zero IQ because it needs
to be told each and every step to perform any of the type of certain task or
action.
2) lack of decision making power or Dependency : computer can not make any
d) The four functional components of computer are :
• Hardware : All the physical or tangible parts of computer which can be
touched and felt are known as hardware. They are peripheral devices used in
computer for specific purpose.
• Software : Software is the collection of programs which makes computer work.
They are the set of computer programs, booting, procedures and associated
documentation related to the effective operation of a computer system.
• Humanware : The person, user or operator associated in computer fields is
known as humanware (liveware). They can be programmers, system analysts,
operating staff, database administrators, hardware technicians and other
personnel working in a computer system.
• Firmware : Firmware is sequence of instruction (software) which is substitute
for hardware and stored in read-only-memory. With the advancement in
technology and the reduction in hardware cost, today, software is also being
made available on ROM Chip which is known as firmware. So, the program
stored in ROM chip is considered as firmware.
e) Computer technology used in education by the following ways:
Students use computer-based-learning (CBL) packages to learn at their own
place.
Students use computers to complete projects which require them to learn to use
various software.
Teachers, students and parents use emails, websites or use social networks for
f) Green computing is the environmentally responsible and eco-friendly
use of computers and their resources. In broader terms, it is also defined
as the study of designing, engineering, manufacturing, using and
disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their
environmental impact.
Five ways to go green in computing are given below:
Data:
Processing:
Information:
b ans: The collection and manipulation of items of data to produce meaningful information is
called data processing. The output of data processing system is it transforms data into useful
information.
E ans: Computer technology is helping educators make significant changes to the learning
process by Educators use computers to prepare notes and presentations of their lectures and
use to develop computer-based learning packages, to provide distance education using the
e-learning software and to conduct online examinations.
C ans: The four basic operations of computer are Input, Process, storage and output.
G ans: The roles that computer play in law and order is it helps to research and store volumes of
cases and judicial proceedings, store information about criminals and suspected criminals,
details of speech intonation, physical characteristic, criminal habits and finger prints.
