Chapter 1

Answer key of Following questions:

Q.No. 8
a) The word computer is derived from Latin word 'Computare' which means
calculate. Therefore, computer is an electronic device which is designed to accept
input data, process them, produce output result and store results for future use. It
operates at a very high speed and gives 100% accurate result. The four basic
operations of computer is Input, Process , storage and output.

Input: It is the process of entering data and instructions into computer system.
Input is performed by input devices like keyboard, mouse, scanner, digital camera
and microphone etc.
Process : It is the process of performing arithmetic and logical operations on data
to convert them into useful information. Processing is performed by CPU- Central
Processing Unit. CPU is also called Processor. It is the brain of computer.
Storage : It is the process of saving data and instructions to make them available
as and when required in future. Data and programs are stored on permanent storage
devices, especially on hard disk. Other permanent storage media include CD -
Compact Disk, DVD - Digital Video Disk and Zip Disk etc.
Output: It is the process of producing useful information after processing data,
b) The important characterstics of computer are
i) Speed ii) Accuracy iii) Diligence iv) Versatility v) Storage capacity
vi) Automatic vii) Reliable
i) Speed : Computers work at a very high speed. They are much faster than
humans.
A computer can perform billions of calculations in a second. Computer
speed is measured in Mega Hertz (MHz).
ii) Accuracy : Accuracy means the capability to provide results without any
errors.
Computer can process large amounts of data and produce 100%
accurate results.
iii) Versatility: A computer can perform different types of tasks. We can
use a
computer in educational institute, in hospital, bank or at home.
computers are being used in banks industry, medical, science and
engineering fields.
c) The main weakness of computer are given below:
1) Zero IQ : since the computer is a dump machine with zero IQ because it needs

to be told each and every step to perform any of the type of certain task or
action.
2) lack of decision making power or Dependency : computer can not make any
d) The four functional components of computer are :
• Hardware : All the physical or tangible parts of computer which can be
touched and felt are known as hardware. They are peripheral devices used in
computer for specific purpose.
• Software : Software is the collection of programs which makes computer work.
They are the set of computer programs, booting, procedures and associated
documentation related to the effective operation of a computer system.
• Humanware : The person, user or operator associated in computer fields is
known as humanware (liveware). They can be programmers, system analysts,
operating staff, database administrators, hardware technicians and other
personnel working in a computer system.
• Firmware : Firmware is sequence of instruction (software) which is substitute
for hardware and stored in read-only-memory. With the advancement in
technology and the reduction in hardware cost, today, software is also being
made available on ROM Chip which is known as firmware. So, the program
stored in ROM chip is considered as firmware.
e) Computer technology used in education by the following ways:
 Students use computer-based-learning (CBL) packages to learn at their own
place.
 Students use computers to complete projects which require them to learn to use
various software.
 Teachers, students and parents use emails, websites or use social networks for
f) Green computing is the environmentally responsible and eco-friendly
use of computers and their resources. In broader terms, it is also defined
as the study of designing, engineering, manufacturing, using and
disposing of computing devices in a way that reduces their
environmental impact.
Five ways to go green in computing are given below:

g) Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer

system resources, especially data storage (cloud storage) and
computing power, without direct active management by the user. The
term is generally used to describe data centers available to many users
over the Internet. Large clouds, predominant today, often have functions

c. The important characteristics of computer are speed, accuracy, diligence, versatile,

storage capacity.
Speed : In general, no human being can complete to solve the complex computation
faster than computer.
Accuracy: Since Computer is programmed, so whatever input we give it gives result
with accurately.
Diligence: Computer can work for hours without any break and creating errors.
d. The role of computer in education are:
- Computer in teaching and learning process
- Research
- Computer based training
Computer helps colleges, schools and big universities to aid the learning process of
students. Professors or teachers take help of audio-visual techniques to prepare
lesson plan for children.
Computer can be used for online education and research with the help of internet.
They can find useful information about their project or assignments.
In this student can learn educational programs or various projects with the help of
audio-visual media.
e) The effects of computer in airlines reservations is its operations become more
efficient and flexible, helps to maintaining and operating the airline's reservation
system and passenger name records. They track passenger bags and cross check to
make sure passengers with checked bags have boarded their flights and he rise of
personal computers and the Internet has given passengers complete control over
booking their own flights and seat selections.
f) The roles of computer that plays in bank are it helps to perform the management of
customers account and also helps to deposit and withdraw the money from bank. It is
used for various task such as calculating interest and printing customers statements.
g) The role of computer in science and technology is it play a very and most
important role in science and technology .Many scientific invention require

A ans: Difference between data and information are given below:
Data Information
Data is collection of raw facts Information is processed data.
and figure.
Data is not arranged. Information is arranged.
Data is unorganized. Information is organized.
Data is not so meaningful. Information is meaningful.
Data is input. Information is output.

b ans: The collection and manipulation of items of data to produce meaningful information is
called data processing. The output of data processing system is it transforms data into useful
information.

E ans: Computer technology is helping educators make significant changes to the learning
process by Educators use computers to prepare notes and presentations of their lectures and
use to develop computer-based learning packages, to provide distance education using the
e-learning software and to conduct online examinations.
C ans: The four basic operations of computer are Input, Process, storage and output.

Four Basic Functions

Input : It helps to gathering data and communicating the data to the computer.
Processing; After then it transform data into meaningful information for by performing various
operations.
Output — it display the data once it has been processed
Storage — storing the result of processing so that they can be used at a later time
