PREPOSITIONS

a word which shows relationships among other words in


the sentence.

.  The relationships include direction, place, time, cause,


manner and amount. 
 
1. He came by bus.
 by is a prep. which shows manner. 
 2. They will be here at three o'clock.
 at is a preposition which shows time 
 3. It is under the table.
 under is a preposition which shows place.
A preposition always goes with a noun or pronoun which is called
the object of the preposition. 

. The preposition is almost always  before the noun or pronoun and


that is why it is called a preposition

The preposition and the object of the preposition together are


called a prepositional phrase

FUNCTION OF PREPOSITIONS
connect a noun structure to some other word in the
sentence.
1. Nouns: She has given the book to Tono.
2. Pronouns: He bought a book for her.
3. gerund phrase: I am looking forward to seeing
you.
4. Noun phrase: Tuti borrowed the book from the
library.
5. Noun clause: He showed the diamond ring to
whoever might be a potential buyer.
SPECIAL FUNCTIONS OF PREPOSITIONAL FORMS

1. Part of verb (verb-preposition combination)


keep on (continue) ; get up (awake)
2. As adverb (mostly of place and direction)
He went down. (adverb)
He went down the stairs. (preposition)

Some prepositions are also used as conjunction (mostly of time)

I will see you after dinner is served.

POSITIONS OF PREPOSITIONS
1. Before its noun object.
2. in final position.
1. In a question
Which house does he live in?
2. In an adjective clause
There is the house where he lines in.
3. In a noun clause
I don’t know which house he lives in.
FORMS OF PREPOSITIONALS

1. one part/word: of, on, at, in, by, etc.


2. two parts: because of, according to, apart from,
as for, etc.
3. three parts: by means of, with reference to, on
account of, in regard to, etc.
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
- Functions
 Adverbial: sit under a tree, leave at nine o’clock,
 Adjectival: the subway under the street, the meeting at nine
o’clock,
 nominal: dispose of the goods, wait for John,
Positions of PP
 an adjectival PP appears after the noun it
modifies. (the students in the back row)
 A nominal PP appears after the verb. (listen
to your parents)
 A nominal PP may appear in initial, mid, or
final position.
