•IDENTIFYWHY FACTS AND OPINIONS ARE USED IN
NONFICTION WRITING.
Definitions
Fact

A fact is something that can be shown to be true. It can be proved.

Opinion

An opinion is a view or judgement that someone has formed but it


cannot be proved to be true.
Why are Facts and Opinion so
important?

 The ability to distinguish between fact


and opinion helps students develop
their critical and analytical skills in
both their reading and
their listening.
 Whether on the news, in advertising,
or a history book, distinguishing
between what is fact and what is opinion is crucial to becoming an
autonomous person with critical abilities.

1. In 1950, the leader of South Korea, Syngman Rhee


threatened to invade North Korea.
2. The Australian Julian Assange is the founder of
WikiLeaks.
3. With fewer cars on the road, there would be less air
pollution and traffic noise; therefore, the use of mass
transportation should be encouraged
Defining Terms: Opinions

Statements of Opinion
 are influenced by the writer’s or speaker’s experiences,
training, interests, and context.
 use language that often packs an emotional punch.
 opinion are often preceded with terms such as
‘I think’ or with adjectives, comparatives and superlatives,
such as, 'good', 'better', 'the best’.

1. Previous President Barack Obama is the greatest

better than those produced by Android.
3. The series “Friends” is funnier, more entertaining,
and more interesting than the series “Money Heist”.

Critical thinking is the best possible way of determining 
which statements are fact and which statements are 
opinion.  
The Language of Fact and Opinion: Signal Words and
Phrases

 Often writers will liven up their facts with a sprinkling of


opinion.
 Unfortunately, it can at times be difficult to extract the
verifiable truths from the author’s preferences and biases.
 Luckily the language used itself often throws up helpful
clues in the forms of words and phrases that assist us in
identifying statements as fact-based or opinion-based.

around 1 billion sheep in the world. The UK is home to over 33 million sheep.

When sheep are under one year old, they are called lambs. They are the cutest of
