Diabetes
• Diabetes has been on the rise in young adults for years now. It is no secret
that diabetes does not discriminate against someone’s age, ethnicity, or
background. It is ranked number seven in the leading causes of death in
the United States. Diabetes however, can be preventable with the proper
exercise, nutrition, and self-awareness of one’s health.
Overview of the Public Health Issue

• In recent studies, diabetes has shown that it

has been slowly increasing in young adults.
• “During 1999–2016, the age-adjusted
prevalence of total diabetes significantly
increased among adults aged 18 years or
older. Prevalence estimates were 9.5% in
1999–2002 and 12.0% in 2013–2016”
(Prevention, 2020).
Severity of the Health Problem
• With the increase of type one and type
two diabetes, young adults are not living
a good quality life.
• According to The Search Diabetes Youth
Study, “The incidence of diabetes (per
100,000/year) in 2002 to 2003 was
24.6/100,000/year representing 15,000
new patients every year with type 1
diabetes and 3,700 with type 2 diabetes,
increasing to 18,436 newly diagnosed
type 1 and 5,089 with type 2 diabetes in
2008 to 2009” (Hamman et al., 2014).
Causes of the
Health Problem and Interventions
• Some studies have shown that “convenience” is one of the
most leading cause of the issues.
• While there are interventions for diabetes it is ultimately
up to the individual to monitor their health.
• “The frequency of diabetes had increased by 12.5%
ADA criteria, 14.6% by 1985 WHO criteria, and 15.3%
by 1999 WHO criteria” (Gabir et al., 2000).
Target Population
• There are many programs out there that will cover multiple
areas like culture, group norms, individual values, and
social pressure. Unfortunately, not all of them will cover it
all in one setting.
• “7,862 incident diabetes cases in 2017: 122 (1.6%) T1D
and 7,713 (98.1%) T2D. The incidence of T1D was highest
in white and black, followed by Hispanic and Asian
individuals. The incidence of T2D was highest among
Hispanic, followed by black, Asian, and white individuals”
(Ferrara et al., 2019).
Recommendations

• To be able to reach as many people as possible.

• To be able to provide healthier choices rather than
unhealthy choices.
• Health Belief Model would be a good way to tackle
the situation. To see if the individual is motivated to
change the their situation.
• Gather the data and make appropriate changes on how
to reach the community.
Chosen Health Education Program.

• American Diabetes Association, accredit

diabetes education programs. (Good
measures)
•  CDC-recognized program that helps people improve
their health, lose weight, feel better, and prevent
diabetes. Participants receive one-on-one support
from their CDC-trained lifestyle coach—a clinician
such as a registered dietitian or certified diabetes
educator—plus online group classroom sessions.
Members support each other as they work on
nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and
weight loss
The Rationale for Choosing Health Education Program

• Support- it’s never easy when trying

to overcome an illness. But just like
rope; one string is easily broken, but
multiple strings are stronger together.
• The feeling of being in control-when
dealing with the illness like diabetes
it is easy to get overwhelmed with the
amount of information that is out
there.
Goals and Outcomes

• To provide better health at a lower

cost.
• Turning science into practice.
• Coaching
• To be able to continue being
successful with managing
diabetes.
Any changes you would make to this program to improve outcomes
and successes?

• I believe the program should be

more tech-savvy. Provide an app
to help the individual be more
successful.
• Provide a blueprint from where
they began to where they’re at
now on the progress they made.
Conclusion
• In conclusion, there are many factors to diabetes increasing, could be
genetics, lack of exercise, lack of eating healthier, and/or aging. Whatever
the fact is we need to get it under control. Some individuals, wait until
they feel sick to see a doctor. By going to the doctor regularly, healthcare
professionals can catch the signs earlier. Which in return can make the
individual’s life a little bit easier because they don’t have to stress about
their health. However, if they do find themselves with diabetes then
there’s plenty of resources for them.
