LESSON 3:
Developmental Tasks and
Challenges experienced during
Adolescence.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the learner shall be able to:
1. Discuss developmental tasks and challenges being experienced during adolescence.
2. Evaluate one’s development through the help of significant people around him/her (peers,
parents, siblings, friends, teachers, community leaders).
3. Identify ways that help one become capable and responsible adolescent prepared for adult life.
"Developmental tasks refers to the
specific knowledge, skills, attitudes and
functions that a person needs to
acquire and demonstrate at particular
periods in his or her life."

The developmental tasks are mastered by teenagers in a sequential order,
following the 3 stages in the adolescence period namely;

 Early Adolescence

 Middle Adolescence

 Late Adolescence

Three Stages
in
Adolescence Period
Adolescence is a period of transition when the
individual changes—physically and psychologically
—from a child to an adult. It is a period when rapid
physiological and psychological changes demand
new social roles to take place.

EARLY ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (12-13 yrs old)
Experiences rapid growth and various changes
Primary developmental task is adapting to biological and
mental development
EARLY ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (12-13 yrs old)
While in this period, you must :
 Embrace the fact that you are physically maturing already and know
how to take care of your body​.
 Accept the fact that you are sexually capable of reproduction​
 Lastly, be comfortable with the way you look
Three Stages in Adolescence Period
MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (14-16 yrs old)
Primary developmental tasks include:
 Accepting one's own physique and using one's body
effectively
 Achieving new and mature relations with age mates of
both sexes
 Achieving a masculine or feminine social roles, and;
 Achieving emotional independence from parents and
adults
MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (14-16 yrs old)

 At this stage, you are also concerned with knowing


who you are, not only as a person who can do
things independently but also as a person who is
interdependent.
 At this stage you need to learn how to handle
heterosexual relationships, dating and sexuality.
MIDDLE ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (14-16 yrs old)

 Your mastery of these task suggests that you


need to be self reliant and psychologically
independent from your parents.
Three Stages in Adolescence Period
LATE ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (17-21 years old)

 At this stage you have already formed


attitudes, learned skills and established
relationships that will help you define
the kind of person you are and life you
want to lead.
LATE ADOLESCENCE PERIOD (17-21 years old)
The developmental tasks include:

 Planning and preparing for marriage life


 Planning an economic career
 Acquiring a set of values, an ethical system as a guide to
behavior or ideology.
 Desiring and achieving socially responsible behavior.

TAKING CHARGE/ ASSUMING
RESPONSIBILITY
- is the ability to choose your own responses to
encountered circumstances. It is taking ownership
or accountability of your behaviors, without
making excuses or blaming others for your
mistakes (Covey, 2004).

Adolescence is full of
challenges because it is a stage
of “becoming" rather
than "being“.

2. Computer Games Addiction


Computer gaming is a popular recreational
activity.
1. Express their feelings
2. Create their own world
3. Find their identity in the characters

3. Running Away from Home


Some of the reasons are:
1. getting physically hurt by their parents
2. feeling unhappy at home
3. to get what they want

4. Sexual Promiscuity
• Due to hormonal changes, teenagers often experience
heightened sexual desire.
• Engagement in sexual activities and sexual explorations are
frequently caused by the prodding of their peers.
• The most number of persons who become infected with HIV are
teenagers (DOH, 2014).

5. Teenage Parenthood

At this stage, teenagers have yet to master life


skills relevant to being responsible in raising
children.

6. Depression (major depressive disorder)
“Depression is a common and serious medical illness
that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and
how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression
causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in
activities once enjoyed.”

7. Suicide
• People who commit suicide don’t want to die, but to
end their pain. Don’t dismiss their talk of suicide as
just threats. If you notice any signs that they may be
thinking about harming themselves, get help.
• The act of killing yourself, most often as a result of
depression or other mental illness (APA).

4. Become more involved with others

teenagers in the past with the present. Make sure that it is relevant to the topic Developmental Tasks and
Challenges experienced during Adolescence. With explanation. You will be graded individually
according to: Graphics (5), Slogan (5), message it conveys (5), and neatness (5).
