Firstly… a quick note from Miss Freeman

about your Results
• Term 1 result is the average between your performance and
theory.

• Some people’s results have been pulled down as a result of their

theory mark.

• Theory work is IMPORTANT. We need to go into this next unit

giving as much effort and respect into our theory as we do with the
practical aspects.

• From now on, everyone needs to bring a book – (not a laptop or

an Ipad) to class every lesson in case we need to review some
theory.

A play is a work of drama, usually
consisting mostly of dialogue
between characters and intended for
theatrical performance rather than
just reading. The writer of a play is
a playwright.
6

The og Playwright

Aeschylus, a playwright, invented what

we now call drama when he wrote a play
that featured two actors and a chorus, who
symbolized the common people or
sometimes the gods.
Important Vocabulary (1) 7

Today we will look at some vocabulary that is

important for our upcoming unit.

We need to start with the idea of prefixes, suffixes

and root words.

Copy the purple, red and green boxes into your

notes.
Important Vocabulary (2) 8

Numerical prefixes include:

Logue (root word)

Means a specified kind of writing or speaking. In addition to monologue and

duologue, there are many words that use logue as a root word!

Eulogy
Apology

But… we have more theatre words!

Important Vocabulary (5)

Prologue - An introduction that sets up the story.

For example, the prologue from Romeo & Juliet states “Two
households both alike in dignity, in fair Verona…” – This tells us
about the setting and that the story centres around two families.
12
Important Vocabulary (6)

Dialogue – Words travelling between people (between actors, or

between actors and audience)

Epilogue - Dialogue at the end of a play – it summarises and helps to

conclude any loose ends.
13

Important Vocabulary (7)

Internal monologue / Soliloquy – Dialogue that shows the characters

innermost thoughts and feelings.

Aside – Dialogue that breaks out of the scene and is spoken TO the
audience. Other characters would not typically hear this dialogue.

Performance Evaluation

➜ Use the checklist to

record how you
think you went in
the table read of the
play.
16

Script reading
➜ Next we will break into groups, and assign roles for a
reading.
➜ After the reading you will need to answer these
questions….

➜ What went well?

➜ What was tricky?
➜ Did you find it easier or harder to “become” the character
than in an improvised performance? Why?
17

Next lesson
We will look at a variety of scripts and make some decisions
about our upcoming dualogue performances.
