INTRODUCTION

Change is most desirable and essential for survival, growth and

diversification of any organisation. Every organization has to
under go change either through a planned effort or through a
well designed process.
It is rightly said that “ change is most unchangeable” . It is
painful but needful in every sphere of life.
Change may affect an individual a group and the whole of
being the organization. If the change is beneficial to parties, it
may be immediately accepted.
DEFINITION OF OC
“Organization change as a process is simply
modification of the structure or process of a system. It
may be god or bad, the concept is descriptive only”.

“ The term organisational change refers to any alteeration

which occurs in the overall work environment of an
organisation.”
Keith Davis
IMPORTANCE OF OC
Technological Advancements
Change is important in coping with emerging technological
advancements in the society. Transforming the business in line
with new technologies helps it to edge out its competitors.
Crisis Management
Change becomes a necessity when an organization finds itself
in a crisis. It helps it rectify some of its processes or activities
that may have become ineffective. The understanding of that
change is important in combating challenges such as fears of
lay-offs, incompatible corporate cultures and increased
turnover -- which often arise from acquisitions and mergers.
 External Factors
Change helps the organization cope with globalization,
which can be a threat or opportunity. Globalization has
made it possible for companies to produce goods and
services at lower costs in some areas than in others. In
coping with globalization, businesses need to understand
the cultural and regional differences in various markets.
Such an understanding equips them with the knowledge to
develop strategies for these markets. Other external factors
that warrant the need for change include decreased or
increased market opportunities, legislation and competition.
 Organisational Culture:
Many companies initiate change to improve their
organizational culture. Changing the organizational
culture, which could include basic beliefs, values,
feelings, and internal and external relationships, can
improve its efficiency and productivity.
 Performance Gaps:
The organization's goals and objectives are not being
met or other organizational needs are not being satisfied.
Changes are required to close these gaps.
EXTERNAL FACTORS
Technological advances :- It is the major external
forces which calls for the change. It has become
indispensable as computer, telecommunication system
and flexible manufacturing operation have affected the
working of all the organization.

Marketing Competition :- At present marketing

condition are no more static. They are in the process of
rapid change as per the needs, desire and expectation of
the customers are changing.
Social Change:- It is found that because of fast spread
of education, knowledge explosion and governments
effort, social change are taking place at a faster speed.

Political forces:- Banking insurance and corporate

sector are being regulated by lot of laws and regulation.
Organization do not have to adopt to meet the pressure
of these forces
 Government Rules and Regulation:- From time to
time government brings change in their policies, rules
and regulation which necessitate change in the
organisation.

 Changes in people requirements:- In these days

being buyer's market, customer does not want to
purchase what is given to hi, rather he goes to purchase
what he desire to purchase. So the seller have to
produce and provide product and services to customer
exactly as per their requirement.
INTERNAL FORCES
Work Force :- With the change in time the profile of
worker has also changed. New generation of worker
have better educational qualification, broader vision
and even they question the authority of their managers.

.Management Structure :- With the passage of time

old management structure, policies, rules regulation and
philosophies become also obsolete. There may have
only line officer whereas demand may be for staff
officer.
 Managerial Staff :- With the passage of time due to
high degree of professionalism and specialization old
manger have to be replaced by new manager.

To Avoid Developing Inertia :- In many cases ,OC

takes place just to avoid developing inertia or
inflexibility. Thus, changes are incorporated so that the
personnel develop liking for change and there is no
unnecessary ressistance when major changes are
brought about in the organisation.
