HE IS SAVED AS SOON AS HE STEPS INTO A STREAM AND IS UNDERSTOOD TO BE THE SON OF POSEIDON WHEN POSEIDON'S TRIDENT APPEARS ABOVE HIS HEAD. POSEIDON VIOLATED THE OATH OF THE THREE GREAT GODS, WHICH THEY GAVE WITH HADES AND ZEUS AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR, NOT TO HAVE MORE CHILDREN, BECAUSE THEIR GENERATION IS TOO STRONG. ZEUS, REALIZING THAT POSEIDON HAD VIOLATED THE OATH, BELIEVES THAT POSEIDON MADE HIS SON STEAL THE LIGHTNING. PERCY HAS 10 DAYS BEFORE THE SUMMER SOLSTICE TO FIND HER, AND ACCORDING TO CHIRON SHE WAS STOLEN BY HADES. PERCY EMBARKS ON AN ADVENTURE, AND LUKE GIVES HIM HIS MAGICAL FLYING SNEAKERS. PERCY, ALONG WITH GROVER AND ATHENA'S DAUGHTER ANNABETH, HEAD WEST TO THE ENTRANCE TO THE UNDERWORLD IN LOS ANGELES. THERE, LUKE'S SNEAKERS, GIVEN TO PERCY, GO TO TARTARUS' HOLE, BUT FORTUNATELY IN THEM IS GROVER, WHO MANAGES TO GET HIS HOOVES OUT. PERCY CONFRONTS HADES, ACCORDING TO WHOM, IN ADDITION TO THE LIGHTNING OF ZEUS, PERCY ALSO STOLE HIS HELMET OF DARKNESS, ALLOWING ITS OWNER TO BECOME A SHADOW. PERCY REALIZES THAT LUKE HAS DECEIVED HIM WHEN HE FINDS THE LIGHTNING IN THE SHIELD HE GAVE HIM. HE ESCAPES FROM THE UNDERWORLD, FORCED TO LEAVE GROVER. PERCY THEN FIGHTS LUKE AND DEFEATS HIM, INJURING HIS HEEL. LUKE GIVES PERCY THE HELMET OF DARKNESS, WHICH PERCY RETURNS TO HADES. PERCY ARRIVES IN TIME IN NEW YORK, WHERE OLYMPUS IS AT THE TOP OF THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, AND RETURNS THE LIGHTNING TO ZEUS. PERCY RETURNS TO CAMP AFTER LEARNING THAT HIS MOTHER IS ALIVE. HE MEETS LUKE, WHO CONFESSES TO HIM THAT HE STOLE THE LIGHTNING FOR CRONUS. HE SUMMONS A POISONOUS SCORPION, WHICH REVIVES PERCY, BUT HE ESCAPES AND COMES TO LIFE. CHIRON HEALS HIM AND PERCY LEAVES TO GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL FOUND BY HIS MOTHER.
