Juan Luna
THE GREAT ONE. Filipino artists in Philippine History with
masterpieces. He excel in artistry, but he also a political activist during the
time of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century.
Works of Juan Luna
Spolarium
The painting was submited by Luna to the Exposicion
National de Bella Artes in 1889 in Madrid where it
garnered the first gold medal.
The most important work of Luna is the Spoliarium,
the largest painting in the Philippines (4.22 m x
7.67 m). Luna spent eight months working on the
painting which is now displayed in the main
gallery of the National Museum of Fine arts. It
won three gold medals in the 1884 Exposicion
Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid.

Relevance The biggest contribution of Juan Luna is the Historical
Spolarium. It is a remarkable painting wherein it is a
tremendous interpretations of the sociological
situations in the Philippines.
Background of the authors
● Fernando Amorsolo Y Cueto, was one of the
most important artists in the Philippines.
● Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of Rural
Philippine Landscape. He is popularly known for
his craftmanship and mastery in the use of light.
● Born May 30,1892 in Paco, Manila.
● Don Faloian de la Rosa, his mother's cousin, was
also a Filipino painter. At the age of 13,
Amorsolo became an apprentice to De la Rosa,
who would eventually become the advocate and
guide to Amorsolo's painting career.
