P&ID Check List for EM/PE

Although P&IDs are developed by process engineers having inputs from

disciplines, EM/PE shall make sure that following requirements have been
incorporated

 Contractual Requirements
 Operational Requirements
 Construction Requirements

This list is developed to help EM/PE ensure the above purpose.

 Skills and Knowledge Required for a Project Engineer

What is P&ID ?
P&ID

It is a schematic representation of functional relationship of piping, instrumentation and

system equipment components. It is termed as final step of process design and also known
as:

 Piping and Instrumentation Diagram

 Process and Instrumentation Diagram
 Mechanical Flow diagram (MFD)

List of P&ID Items

 Process piping, sizes and identification
 Instrumentation and designations
 Mechanical equipment with names and numbers
 All valves and their identifications
 Miscellanea - vents, drains, special fittings, sampling lines, reducers
 Permanent start-up and flush lines
 Flow directions
 Control inputs and outputs, interlocks
 Interfaces for class changes
 Identification of components and subsystems delivered by others
Types of P&ID
 P&ID for Individual Process Units Composing the onsite & offsite facilities

 P&ID for Utility Distribution UFD ; flow of utilities in onsite facilities

 P&ID for Interconnecting Pipe work Coordination flow diagram; interconnection B/W
units & offsite ,onsite facilities

 P&ID for Tie-in Connection

Tie in points of new units with existing

 P&ID for Auxiliary facilities Detailed information for equipments can not be
shown on P&ID for individual units

 P&ID for packaged units

P& ID for units such as compressor, refrigeration etc.

Category of Checkpoints

A) Mandatory

B) Recommended

C) As Knowledge

How to Read Check List

Choice Description of
item 5 During the estimation stage

1 Important Point for Process View Point

D Draft P&ID
2 Requirements by Client
3 Scope of work
Check Timing 0 Rev.0
4 Important Coordination
among Disciplines
1 Rev.1
5 Cost Down Idea

6 Const. Maintenance and Operation viewpoint 2 Rev.2

Category A : Mandatory
EM/PE shall check the P&IDs bearing the points in mind.

 Contractual Requirements
 Legends of P&IDs
split scope
 Split Scope between Client and Contractor
 Split Scope between Vendor and Contractor
JZ

 Item and Numbers of Equipment.

 Battery Limit Requirements of Vendor's package
 Isolation Philosophies
 Block Valve omission checklist
BV Omission
Category B: Recommended

 Installation of Flow meter (FI)

Flow meter(FI) installation shall be minimized if the line is bottom outlet of tower/drum as it requires certain straight
run.(FIC-LIC cascade control is an example)

 Material Selection
Material Selection should be done in cost effective way. Sometimes coating of special material fulfills the
requirement.

 Application of Steam Trace

Application of steam trace shall be reviewed carefully considering
o Min. distance indication can avoid the steam trace.
o Merit of using electrical heat trace instead of using steam tracing or jacketing to be checked.

 Trombone piping to be checked for cost down

If there are several minimum flow lines for each pumps described in P&ID, the lines should be arranged for one
common minimum flow line of the pumps.
Category B :Recommended

 Application of Ring joint

Application of ring joint to (a) High temp. and (b) High pressure, shall carefully be considered. Note that
the time of piping heat extension/shortening will cause the leak problem during shutdown and startup if
RJ is applied to.
 Oval Ring Joint Preferred over Octagonal Ring joint
Ring Joint-oval ring joint is better than octagonal ring joint. Octagonal ring joint requires "rubbing" before
use while oval does not.
 Class break point shall be explicitly indicated.
Class Break

 Drain Valve around CV

Drain Valve around CV: When CV is FO type, drain shall be at upstream of CV. When CV is FC type, drain
shall be at both upstream and downstream
Drain Valve Config
Category B :Recommended

 Instrument Location
Indication of instrument shall be realistic as possible. Temperature gauge shall be located as near to the
equipment as possible because temperature will change if the instrument is far from the subject

 Cost Down Ideas

– Application of dual outlet relief valves

– Piping lines configuration to be checked
– Piping line size to be checked

 Butterfly Valves Instead of Gate Valves

To apply butterfly type valves for large size piping instead of using gate type valves for cost reduction.

 To Check Strainer Requirement

To check whether temporary type strainers could be used for suction strainers of pumps, compressors,

turbines and etc

Category C: For Reference

 Drain Line for Viscous Fluid

For highly viscous fluid, the drain line size shall be min. 1-1/2"

 Termination of Vent/Drain
Whether the termination of vent/drain(i.e cap or flange) has been determined by Piping Specification? Then, has it
been followed in the P&ID's?

 AFC (Air Fin Cooler) Manifold Piping Arrangement AFC MFP AFC MFP1

Should be shown on the Note column graphically

 SB or Spacer/Blind
spacer location
Should be indicated at proper location as per isolation philosophy.

 Use 'Max' and 'Min' Distance Requirement

Indication of specific figure should be avoided, so that the degree of piping arrangement freedom increase

 Free Drain Start Point shall be Indicated Clearly, (From where until where)
Category C: For Reference

 Installation of Partial Condenser

When the partial condenser will be installed, make sure that the OVHD receiver is LOWER than the partial
condenser. Free drain is required from the top of the overhead extraction line.
fig

 Thermosyphon Reboiler
When the reboiler is thermosyphon type, elevation requirement (Lower TL of tower- Bottom Flange of
reboiler (H/E)) shall be clearly shown.

Document

 Drawing of Treated Water

When the treated water is drawn from the tower bottom and the liquid being circulated is drawn off from
the treated water line, the line shall be connected on the top of treated water line.
 Safety Valves to be Checked
To check whether every installation point is specified or not, especially relieve valves against for thermal
expansion ,to check unification of arrangement around safety valves, such as spare safety valves, block
valves etc.
Category C Contd.
 Miscellaneous Lines for Rotary Machines to be Checked
To check misc. lines, such as warm-up, cool down, flushing, purging and buffer gas for rotary
machines installed far from process area , to check auxiliary piping also for the machine installed far
from the area

 Requirement of Block Valve

 Type of Valves to be Checked

 To Check Extent and Type of Insulation

 Requirement of 'No drain pocket', 'No vent pocket' shall be Clearly Indicated

 Vent holes of Valves to be Indicated

 To Check Required Points of Sample Connections

 Flushing Oil Connections
