    Objective
     At the end of the presentation, RNs will be
    able to:
    1. Understand the significance of Pain
    Assessment and Management.
    2. Identify the correct technique of assessing
    pain.
    3. Be familiar with PFKCC policy on Pain
    Assessment and Management.
    PAIN ASSESSMENT
    What is PAIN?
     An uncomfortable feeling that might signify a tissue damage.
     Highly SUBJECTIVE.
     It can be steady, throbbing, stabbing, aching or pinching.
     Classification:
    1. ACUTE: severe, short-lived.
    2. CHRONIC: mild to severe, present for long periods and
    often require treatment.

    When should PAIN ASSESSMENT be PERFORMED?
    1. On admission/ within 4-hours of admission.
    2. Before trans-in
    3. During handover
    4. With each VITAL SIGNS assessment
    5. Before and after pain medication is given
    6. Before and after invasive procedures

     How frequent should PAIN ASSESSMENT be carried out?


    1. With EACH VITAL SIGNS assessment (Critical Care Units HOURLY, Non-critical care Unit
    EVERY 4-HOURS).
    2. Before and after administering pain medication.

     How should an RN choose the appropriate PAIN ASSESSMENT TOOL?


    Assess AGE and Clinical Condition

     Can a nurse administer PHARMA intervention without a doctor’s order?
