Introduction to Materials sciences and Engineering

Materials Science and engineering

Types of materials
Competition among the materials
Design and selection of materials
Targets of this course

 To introduce types of materials (metals, ceramics,

polymers, semiconductors etc.)
 To understand Properties of materials (mechanical, thermal,

electrical, optical etc.)

 To understand different levels of structure in materials

(atomic, microscopic, macroscopic etc.)

 Relation among material processing, structure, properties,

and performance.
 The main objective is to understand the basic concepts and

language of Materials Science.

Overall course objectives

 To understand the appropriate use and “selection of

various engineering materials” in designing and
manufacturing of components and associated processes.

 To acquire knowledge related to the “microstructure of

engineering materials”.
 In January 2004, two robotic geologists named Spirit and
Opportunity were sent to Mars to explore the Martian surface
and geology by NASA.
 Spirit was active until 2010. Opportunity is still active.
