Man's Best Friend
There are three main relationships that people have with Supporting
dogs. First, we have working dogs. These dogs, such as sentences
Siberian huskies and collies, serve people almost like
employees. To a sheep farmer, for example, a good sheepdog
is his most valuable partner. Other dogs are known primarily
for their excellence in sports. The sleek and extremely fast
greyhound is used in dog races, and many hunting dogs, such
as setters, retrievers, and pointers, often compete in hunting
trials. Third, many people enjoy dogs as companions. All kinds
of dogs can be excellent companions, but a few breeds are
kept only for this purpose. Some examples are the toy dogs,
such as Chihuahuas or Lhasa apsos. Because of the
relationships they have with people, dogs are often called

The dog is generally considered the first domesticated animal. It paragraph
is believed that the direct ancestor of the domestic dog is the wolf,
originally found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.
Archeologists have found remains of dogs that are 10,000 years old. Thesis statement
In these ancient societies, as well as in our modern one, there are
three main relationships that people have with dogs.
First, there are working dogs. These dogs, such as Siberian
huskies and collies, serve people almost like employees. The dogs
help pull heavy loads, round up cattle, and keep a sharp eye out for
strangers. To a sheep farmer, for example, a good sheepdog is his
most valuable partner. Sheepdogs, such as Border collies, standard Body Paragraph 1
collies, and Shetland sheepdogs, are very intelligent and can learn
to respond to hand signals as well as spoken words. Sheepdogs in
Scotland, for instance, move sheep along with just a glance from
the farmer. As a result, working dogs know their worth to their
master, and they are proud of it.
Other dogs are known primarily for their excellence in sports. For example, the
sleek and extremely fast greyhound is used in dog races. These races take place on
specially prepared tracks where the competitors chase a mechanical rabbit. People
gamble on these athletes' performance. Next, special hunting dogs often compete in
hunting trials. Bird dogs are a type of hunting dog. Setters and pointers, for example, Body Paragraph 2
recognize a bird's scent long before it makes a sound and show their owner where the
bird is by standing very still. Retrievers, such as golden retrievers or Labrador
retrievers, will throw themselves into an icy cold lake to pick up the bird their owner
has shot. Clearly, sporting dogs are the athletes of the dog world.
Third, many people enjoy dogs as companions. All kinds of dogs can be excellent
friends. Both the working dogs and the hunting dogs have great patience and are very
good with small children. Most of these dogs will allow children to climb all over them
and are great baby-sitters because of their loyalty to their owner and their family. A Body Paragraph 3
few breeds are kept only for the purpose of being a companion. Some of these are the
toy dogs, such as Chihuahuas or Lhasa apsos. Since these dogs are so tiny, they are
great to have if you live in a small apartment. In short, all dogs, including the toy
dogs, are wonderful companions.
In summary, although there are a great many breeds of dogs, they can be classified
into these three main types by their relationships to their owners. Even if you have no Conclusion
interest in sports and no farm, you can have a great companion in a dog. Because of
the relationships they have with people, dogs are often called "man's best friend.”

Thesis Statement
Thesis Statement
 Itis the most important sentence in the

essay because it contains the main idea for
the whole essay. Just as major supporting
sentences need to directly support the
topic sentence in a paragraph, the body
paragraphs in an essay must also support
the thesis statement in an essay.
Components of a Thesis Statement
 Topic: what the essay is about

 Controlling idea: what you are going to write about the topic
 Predictor: tell the reader about the numbers and/or content
of the body paragraphs. (Some thesis statements ONLY)

 The movie was a joy to watch because of its visual effects,
surround sound, and actors.

1) Must be a statement, NOT a question.

2) Must be a complete sentence.
3) Is an opinion or shows intent, NOT fact.
4) State the controlling idea, NOT just the
topic.
5) Has only ONE controlling idea.

When you write an introductory
paragraph, keep in mind that:
 Writing an introductory paragraph is
like greeting someone. The paragraph
should be short and to the point like
saying, “Hello!”
 Also,you don’t want to get into the

meat of the essay. Simply give the
audience a concise idea of your essay’s
purpose.

Remember that the Introductory
Paragraph:
 Is the most important paragraph of the essay
 Must be relevant to the topic
 Should not give detailed info. about the main
ideas of the essay
 Should be at least two sentences before the
thesis statement
 Thesis statement should come at the end of
the introductory paragraph.

Examples of general statement
introduction
 Everyday, the newspapers, television, and
radio news programs are flooded with stories
about the tragic results of drug addiction.
 One of the Surgeon General’s latest public-

health crusades is a fight against the growing
tide of fat and flab among American children.
 Mountain bikes have taken over the bicycle

industry.
(These are three different examples of how you can begin
your paragraph. If you will notice in the first sentence you
simply introduce the topic. You do not state your position 18
yet.)
Examples of question introduction
 Arestandardized tests a fair measure of academic
potential?
 Should handgun ownership be outlawed in the United

States?
 Canmountain bikers peacefully coexist with hikers on

wilderness trails?
(You can also begin your essay by asking a question. A question
usually takes you to the heart of the problem quickly.)

Example of Anecdote
 Yesterday, seven-year-old Billy Barnes came home at 3:30
and let himself into his house with his key. After fixing
himself a snack of five Oreo cookies and a glass of soda,
Billy watched television (MTV) for two hours. When Billy
telephoned his mother at work, she was in a meeting and
couldn’t talk to him. Billy represents a growing number of
latchkey children who feel neglected, don’t do their
homework, and get in trouble when they get older.
 (You can also begin your essay by writing a personal
story. The story can be about you, or someone else’s;
it can be real or invented.)

Examples of Statistic Introduction
A recent article in Time magazine states that the
viewing of extremely violent television shows is the
number one cause of violence in our inner cities.
 The Inquirer recently conducted a study and
concluded that students in public schools where
uniforms are mandatory have fewer problems and
perform better academically.
 A recent Gallup poll reported that 75%of Americans
consider themselves to be environmentalists.
(You can begin an essay by providing some information from a magazine
or newspaper you might have read. This introduction is a bit more
difficult to write, but just as effective as the other ones.)

Examples of Historical Introduction
 The contemporary history of the world's
favorite game, football, spans more than 100
years. It all began in 1863 in England.
 In the 1970s, Alan Kay of the Xerox Palo Alto
Research Center had a vision for a wireless
portable computer roughly the size of
a notebook.
 (You can begin an essay by providing a brief historical
introduction to your essay. Since this is just the introduction
to the essay, you don’t need to give detailed information, just
an overview.)

8000 years. Around 2,000 years
ago tobacco began to be chewed
and smoked during cultural or
religious ceremonies and events.

everyone’s health, it pollutes the
environment, and it drains
valuable resources.
