    Part I: INTRODUCTORY RITE
    purpose of this rite

    help the assembled people to become a


    worshipping community and to prepare
    them for listening to God’s word and
    celebrating the Eucharist properly.
    Parts:
     Entrance/Introduction

     Veneration of the Altar and


    Greeting of the Congregation
     Penitential Rite

     Gloria

     Opening Prayer or Collect


    Entrance/

    Introduction
    Usually a song is being sung to
    open the celebration, intensify
    the unity of the gathered people,
    lead their thoughts to the
    mystery of the season and
    accompany the procession of the
    priest and ministers.
    At other times, especially
    during special occasions or
    feasts, a short introduction
    is being prepared to
    situate/introduce the
    celebration.
    Within the introduction
    extra liturgical
    preparations may be made
    to make the introduction
    more meaningful and
    solemn.
    As early as this part we
    already experience concretely
    our
    oneness/unity as a
    community.
     Veneration of the
    Altar and
    Greeting of the
    Congregation
    The greeting of the priest
    declares to the assembled
    community that the Lord is
    present.
    Penitential
    Rite
    The priest invites the faithful to
    take part in the penitential rite,
    which the entire community
    carries out through a communal
    confession and which the priest’s
    absolution brings to an end.
    Gloria
    The Gloria is an ancient hymn in
    which the Church, assembled in
    the Holy Spirit, praises and entreats
    the Father and the Lamb.
    Opening Prayer
    or Collect
    The priest invites the people to pray
    and together with him they observe a
    brief silence so that they may realize
    they are in God’s presence and may
    call their petitions to mind.

    Part II: LITURGY OF THE
    WORD

    Introduce into the word

    and living them out in
    one’s life.

    faithful and open
    up the riches of
    the Bible to them.
    Homily
    The homily is an
    integral part of the
    liturgy. It is
    necessary for the
    nurturing of the
    Christian life.
     Profession of Faith

    to call to mind the


    truths of faith before
    they begin to celebrate
    the Eucharist.
     General Intercession/prayers of
    the faithful.

    It is in this particular part of the Mass


    that the Church indicates that the
    Eucharist is celebrated in communion
    with the whole Church in heaven and
    on earth, the living and the dead, and
    in communion with the pastors of the
    Church.
