WHAT IS THE DIGITAL AGE?

The digital age is defined as a historic
period starting in the 1970s with the
introduction of the personal computer with
subsequent technology introduced
providing the ability to transfer
information freely and quickly.

HISTORY and
GENERATIONS of
DIGITAL AGE
Charles Babbage (1791-1871),
An English mathematics professor who
designed the first Analytical Engine. The
first complete Babbage Engine was
completed in London in 2002, 153 years
after it was designed.
First generation: 1937 – 1946
In 1937 the first electronic
digital computer was built by
Dr. John V. Atanasoff and
Clifford Berry. It was called the
Atanasoff-Berry Computer
(ABC).

In 1946 the first general– purpose digital

computer, the Electronic Numerical
Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was
built. . It was Turing-complete, digital and
able to solve "a large class of numerical
problems" through reprogramming.
Second generation:
1947 – 1962

•In 1951 the first computer for

commercial use was introduced to
the public; the Universal
Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1)
•In 1953 the International Business Machine (IBM) 650 and 700 series
computers made their mark in the computer world. Subsequently, over 100
computer programming languages were developed, computers had
memory and operating systems.
Second Generation : Programming Language

It is a formal language, which comprises a

set of instructions that produce various kinds of
output and implement algorithms.
⬡ Plankalkül, developed by Konrad Zuse for his
Z1 computer between 1943 and 1945 but not
implemented at the time
⬡ Autocode developed by Alick Glennie was possibly
the first compiled programming language, at the
University of Manchester
Second Generation : Memory and OS

Memory -  used to store information

for immediate use in a computer or
related computer hardware device.

Tape/ disk as printing output

Third Generation : Intro of
Internet
• Early 1960s, MIT’s J.C.R. Licklider popularized
the idea of an “Intergalactic Network” of
computers.
• In the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET,
or the Advanced Research Projects Agency
Network, packet switching, a method for
effectively transmitting electronic data that
would later become one of the major building
blocks of the internet, is used to allow multiple
computers to communicate on a single
network.
• In the 1970s after scientists Robert Kahn and
Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control
Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a
communications model that set standards for
how data could be transmitted between
multiple networks.
Third Generation :
Birth of Ethernet

• On May 22, 1973, Bob Metcalfe wrote a memo

describing the Ethernet network system he had
invented for interconnecting advanced computer
workstations, making it possible to send data to
one another and to high-speed laser printers.
Probably the best-known invention at Xerox
PARC was the first personal computer
workstation with graphical user interfaces and
mouse pointing device, called the Xerox Alto.
Third Generation: •In 1980 Microsoft Disk Operating System
(MS-Dos) was born and in 1981 IBM
Start of Domination introduced the personal computer (PC) for
home and office use.
• ARPANET adopted TCP/IP on January 1, 1983,
Third Generation : and from there researchers began to assemble
the “network of networks” that became the
“Network of Networks” modern Internet.
In 1984 Apple gave us the
Macintosh computer with
its icon driven interface.
Windows 1.0, spearheaded by
Bill Gates, was released on
November 20, 1985, as the
first version of the
Microsoft Windows line. It
runs as a graphical, 16-bit
multi-tasking shell on top of
an existing MS-DOS
 installation. It provides an
environment which can run
graphical programs designed
for Windows, as well as
existing MS-DOS software.
World Wide Web
The online world then took on a more
recognizable form in 1990, when
computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee
invented the World Wide Web. While
it’s often confused with the internet
itself, the web is just the most common
means of accessing data online in the
form of websites and hyperlinks.
Is INTERNET
synonymous with
Not
World Wide Really!
Web?
INTERNET:
a global computer network
providing a variety of
information and
communication facilities,
consisting of interconnected
networks using
standardized
communication protocols.
WORLD WIDE WEB
an information system on the
Internet which allows documents
to be connected to other
documents by hypertext links,
enabling the user to search for
information by moving from one
document to another.
The
Cloud
Cloud storage is a model of
computer data storage in which the digital data
is stored in logical pools. The physical storage
spans multiple servers (sometimes in multiple
locations), and the physical environment is
typically owned and managed by a hosting
company. These cloud storage providers are
responsible for keeping the data available and
accessible, and the physical environment
protected and running.
