What is an ESL Program?
An ESL Program is designed to help students learn English as their
second or even third language. The program is designed to develop
their speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.

ESL helps students become more fluent in English by breaking down concepts and language rules.

NEED ASSISTANCE TRANSITIONING

MORE ABOUT AZELLA TESTING
THE ARIZONA ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER ASSESSMENT (AZELLA) IS A STANDARDS-BASED ASSESSMENT THAT MEETS BOTH STATE
AND FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS TO MEASURE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY. AZELLA IS USED FOR BOTH PLACEMENT
AND REASSESSMENT PURPOSES. STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS ON THE HOME LANGUAGE
SURVEY TAKE THE AZELLA PLACEMENT TEST, AND THE STUDENTS’ PROFICIENCY SCORES DETERMINE APPROPRIATE PLACEMENT FOR
INSTRUCTION.

Teacher responsibilities for ELL
Students :
- TEACHERS ARE EXPECTED TO EVALUATE, INSTRUCT, AND IMPROVE ENGLISH
PROFICIENCY AS WELL AS SERVE AS RESOURCE TO THE SCHOOL FOR ENGLISH
LANGUAGE CONCERNS.

- ABOVE ALL ELSE : ADVOCATE FOR THE NEEDS OF THE ELL STUDENTS
- SERVE AS A RESOURCE TO CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO HELP ELL STUDENTS ACHIEVE
ACADMICALLY IN THE CLASSROOM.
- -ADMINISTER A LANGUAGE SCREENER TO STUDENTS FOR WHOM A LANGUAGE
BARRIER IS IMPEDING THEIR ACADEMIC SUCCESS
- USE LANGUAGE TEACHING STRATEGIES TO INCREASE ENGLISH PROFICIENCY FOR
STUDENTS WHO SPEAK A LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH AT HOME.
