What is environmental
scanning ?
Environmental scanning is the process of continually acquiring
information on events occurring outside the organization to
identify and interpret potential trends.
Environmental scanning is a process of gathering, analyzing,
and dispensing information for tactical or strategic
purposes.

MERITS OF SWOT
ANALYSIS:-
•It is a source of information for strategic planning.
• Builds organization’s strengths.
•Reverse its weaknesses.
•Maximize its response to opportunities.
•Overcome organization’s threats.
•It helps in identifying core competencies of the firm.
•It helps in knowing past, present and future so that by
using past and current data, future plans can be chalked
out.
DEMERITS OF SWOT ANALYSIS:-

There are certain limitations of SWOT Analysis which are not in


control of management. These include:-

•Price increase
•Inputs/ raw materials
•Government legislation
•Economic environment
•Searching a new market for the product which is not having
overseas market due to import restrictions; etc.

Internal limitations may include-


•Insufficient research and development facilities
•Faulty products due to poor quality control
•Poor industrial relations
•Lack of skilled and efficient labour
GAP ANALYSIS
GAP ANALYSIS

A Gap analysis is defined as a method of assessing the differences between


the actual performance and expected performance in an organization or a
business. The term “gap” refers to the space between “where we are” (the
present state) and where “we want to be” (the target state). A gap analysis
can also be referred to as need analysis, need assessment or need-gap
analysis.

It is useful method to describe the process involved in deciding what course


of action should be taken to remove any potential profit or sales gap or risk
gap.

AND OPPORTUNITY
PROFILE (ETOP)
Environmental threat and opportunity profile is
the description of the structure of external
factors. These factors may be neutral, favourable,
unfavourable impact on operations of an
organization in the environment.
ADVANTAGES OF ETOP
Help to determine the key threats and opportunities.

• Good tool to qualify the factors related


to company’s strategy.

• Can consider many factors for


each special case.
DISADVANTAGES OF ETOP

•Lack of Forewarning of Unforeseen Events.


•Environmental analysis does not predict the
future.
• No Assurance as to Organization
effectiveness. Environmental analysis does
not ensure organizational effectiveness.
•Not fully Reliable.
•Absence of Strategic Approach.
MERITS OF PESTLE
ANALYSIS
•It is cost effective.

•It gives us deep understanding.

•Conducting a pestle analysis makes us more alert.

•It helps us in identifying the opportunities.


DEMERITS OF PESTLE
ANALYSIS
•Gathering vast information is not easy.
•We can’t be sure of the external factors staying the
same.
•A pestle analysis seems like a simple presentation.
•Lack of information may lead us to feed assumptions
in it.
CONCLUSION
•Business environment is dynamic. Many elements in the
environment undergo changes. Technological changes are frequent,
tastes and preferences of people change, competitive situation
changes. All these factors indicate that a business policy should be
dynamic enough to be successfully adaptable to the changing
environment.

•Therefore the success of a business today, depends on its ability to


foresee the environmental changes and to modify its strategies
appropriately with internal and external environmental changes.
