Being a Filipino

What is Political Self?

Representation of oneself about
him/herself
Public identity one makes and constructs
about him/ herself to be.
Political position based on the interests
and perspectives of one’s social
organizations.
Who is a Filipino?

According to 1987 Philippine Constitution,
“Filipino citizens are those whose fathers or
mothers are citizens of the Philippines, those
born before January 17, 1973, of Filipino
mothers, who elect Philippine citizenship
upon reaching the age of majority, and those
who are naturalized in accordance with
law.”
Filipino Values & Traits

Traits - referred to as a distinguishing
characteristic, typically one belonging to a
person
Values - is the regard that something is held
to deserve; the importance, worth or
usefulness of something.
Filipino Values

The Filipino values can best be seen from the
aspects of personal and social relationships.
Filipinos value more their honor and status
than anything else.
In decision making, Filipinos usually consult
and take into consideration the consensus of
the family members as the feelings of those
who are to be affected.

Socially, Filipinos give more
emphasis on social relationships.
In terms of emotions, Filipinos are
friendly.
Stages and Development of Filipino Value Formation:


Pre-conditional Stage: Childhood

Conventional Stage: Youth

Post-conventional Stage: Adulthood


Values of Filipinos

The Filipino Hospitality

In a Filipino family, whenever
there are visitors, we take care
of them by preparing a meal or
offering a drink.
It is a Filipino brand
Respectful

Filipinos greet their elders by
kissing their hand while saying
“mano po”
Filipinos often have a way of
saying “po” and “opo” to those
who are older to them.
Close Family Ties

Filipinos maintain a tight
relationship with their families
regardless if the children are
old enough and already have
families of their own.
Good-humored

Filipinos have a habit of smiling
and laughing a lot.
Despite all the problems they are
facing, they still managed to find
the joy in everything.
Selfless

This can be seen as an extension of the
Hospitable trait of a Filipino.
Filipinos would go extra miles just to
help a loved one in need.
An example of this are their modern
day heroes or the OFWs that sacrificed
to work abroad.
Bayanihan

 The spirit of communal unity and
cooperation.
 Filipinos are always ready to help
their fellow country men.
Negative Filipino
Values

“Bahala na”

The Filipino version of the famous
line “Hakuna matata” meaning no
worries.
Colonial mentality

Lack of patriotism and the attitude
where Filipinos favor foreign
products more than their own.
Mañana Habit

It is synonymous to Filipino
phrase “mamaya na” meaning,
dawdling things. Which could
have been done at an earlier time.
Ningas Kugon

“Ningas” is a Filipino term for
flame and “ Kugon” is a Filipino
term for Cogon grass that easily
burns out after it is put flames.
High PRIDE

Most Filipino hold on to their
pride as if they are more precious
than keeping a good relationship
with family and loved ones.
Jealous of others’
Achievement

This is a toxic trait among Filipinos
where one resents the achievement
of another, instead of being happy
for that person.
Filipino Time

Filipinos have this common
attitude of arriving late at
commitments, dinner, or parties
especially if they are meeting
someone close to them.
Filipino Markers

Salawikain

 These are the sayings that gives
lesson and reflects Filipino
practices, beliefs, and traditions.
Superstitions

Filipinos subscribed their own set of
superstitions passed down from
generation to generation, some of which
have influenced by their beliefs from
other cultures.
Filipinos have retold some superstitions
according to their own experiences.
Myths and Legends

The stories that tell and explain the
origin of things, and at the same
time, teach a valuable lesson.
Heroes and Icons

 Famous Filipino icons such as Lea
Salonga, Mann Pacquiao, and our
very own national hero, Jose Rizal,
also serve as important Filipino
markers as they have made the
Filipino name more famous
worldwide through their talents and
expertise.
How to be a good Filipino

1. Be an active Filipino Citizen
2. Study the Philippine History
3. Support local products
4. Speak Filipino language
5. Do not spread fake news and be
democratic in engaging with dissent.
