VALUES
DEVELOPMENT
What is Values
Development?
Values Development
Values are personal perception of
one’s own future, relatively of the
family, works, friendship, group,
community and nation as a whole.
They converge in one culture form
sets of attitude and behaviors
observed among others.
Values sprout anywhere as a living
example of one’s culture and
tradition.
In the philippines, values for things
held dear are sources of status
symbol, like; wealth, economic
status, authority, politics, and
even personal ambition.

The ideals that give
significance to our lives reflect
different levels of needs.
According to (Maslow 1993)
There are at least five (5) sets
of goals related to basic needs
of a person:
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

1. Physiologic / Biological needs –

Primary needs for food, water, rest,
sleep, and other biological
requirements to keep the body healthy
and fit.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
2. Psycological /Safety needs – a broad
concern for safety and stability in the
world, security from environmental
hazards, assault, tyranny, etc.; being
assured of adequate provisions such as
having a job with tenure, retirement, and
other priviledges, savings and insurance
of various kind.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
3. Love and Belongingness needs -
being in a mutual relationship of
affection, caring and nurture with
one’s significant other.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
4. Esteem needs - self-respect that is
firmly based on capacity,
achievement and respect from others.
Satisfaction of the self-esteem needs
leads to feeling of self-confidence,
worth, strength, capability and
affirmation of being useful and
necessary in the world.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
5. Self-actualization – becoming more
and more what one is, and what one
is potentially capable of becoming.
The person is basically satisfied in
all his or her needs, and functions to
the fullest and healthiest
creativeness.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Levels of Values
We may then classify values into two levels:

1. Foundation values – relate to the

satisfaction of the basic or
fundamental for life to be sustained
and to achieve a relative state of
health.
Levels of Values
2. Ultimate values – there have always been
people through the ages who have paused,
pondered and asked questions like: What
life all about? What are we here for? Are
we here for our own sake? What is human
life meant to be? People who seek to
answer such questions move on to the
ultimate matters of life.
