Definition
The WBS can be defined as, ” a deliverable oriented hierarchical
decomposition of work to be executed by project team to accomplish the project
objectives and to create required deliverables.
Concept:-

 Work- Work refers to work products or deliverables that are results of

efforts and not to the efforts itself.
 Breakdown:- division into parts or categories; separation into simpler
substances; decomposition.
 Structure:- Something arranged in a definite pattern of organization.
WBS levels:-

1. Project level
2. Sub-project level
3. Task level
4. Work package level
5. Activity level
Example:-
Sports complex

Work for indoor games Work for outdoor games Work for
(Badminton,Table tennis, etc) (Foot ball, Racing ,etc) Hostels

Leveling
Project level :- Sports complex
Sub-project level :- Indoor and outdoor games & hostels
Task level :- Foundation, Plinth, etc.
Work-package level :- Earthwork, Base preparation, etc.
Activity level :- Layout, Excavation, Cleaning, etc.
100 % rule:-
This rule states that, WBS includes 100 % of the work
defined by project scope and captures all the deliverables in
terms of work to be completed.
Integration with PM processes:-

Process group Importance of WBS

Initiating Develop preliminary project scope statement
Planning Scope definition
Cost estimating and budgeting
HR planning
Risk identification
Plan purchases and acquisition

Executing Information distribution

Monitoring and Scope verification
controlling Scope control
Cost control
Relationship with other tools:-

Project charter
Project scope statement
Program and portfolio WBS
RBS(Resources Breakdown Structure)
OBS(Organization Breakdown Structure)
WBS dictionary
Project schedule network diagram
WBS quality:-
The WBS is said to be of good quality, if
it satisfies the purpose for which it was
prepared.
WBS quality principles:-
WBS quality principle 1
Quality WBS is a WBS, constructed in such a way that
it satisfies all of the requirements for its use in a project.
WBS quality principle 2
WBS quality characteristics apply at all levels of
scope definition.
WBS Preparation methods

1. Top down
2. Bottom up
3. WBS standards
4. WBS templates
Uses:-
 Defines project work
 Defines project scope
 Provides baseline for control
 Provides framework for stakeholders
 Gives clear end product
 Helps in cost estimating
 Helps in risk identification
 Simplifies resources planning and allocation
 Provides clear working schedule
