Palaw’an tribe

History
O the Palaw’an, also known as Palawano is an indigenous
ethnic group found in the province of Palawan.
O it is subdivided into four ethnolinguistic subgroups namely;
 Quezon Palawan (the Central Palawano)
 Bugsuk Palawano (South Palawano)
 Brooke’s Point Palawano
 Southwest Palawano
O the indigenous group belongs to large Manobo-based linguistic
groups of the Southern Philippines.

O they were originally found in the interior regions of South


Apuruan on the West Coast and South of Abo-Abo on the East
Coast, these regions may be located in the Southern part of the
province of Palawan.

O the Palaw’ans have became popularly known as Palawans


which is pronounced faster that the name of the province.
O they were originally nomadic, however, agrarian settlers
began coming and occupying their vast domain.
O the tribe used to exploit the most fertile piece of land and
move on to the next one; their family units were very small
which was probably caused by high mortality rates.
O they built their houses on a hillside that is close to a river or a
stream using four skinny trunks of trees.
O they hunt wild animals using spears with lethal poison at the
tip of it and catch fish by using a special root sap that is diluted
in a shallow river or stream.
O they are considered naïve when it comes to socialization and
would always welcome outsiders with great precaution since
they have always been scared of getting sick.
O It is believed that the Palaw’ans have the shortest lifespan of
all peoples but there is no statistical data that could back up
this claim.
O This tribe has no concept of years when asked about when
they were born, they would usually use a tree as the reference
of their age, saying that they were born when the tree was
just at a certain height.
CLOTHINGS AND FOOD PREFERENCE
O The men in this tribe wear g-strings while the women wear
patadyong which is a native wrap that is similar to the
malong.
O The Palaw’ans do not use salt, their usual diet is composed of
rice, banana, cassava, vegetables, rimas or breadfruit, wild pigs
from hunting, birds such as wild quials and tikling, wild
chicken/labuyo, and freshwater fish.
O they also prepare a delicacy called pinyaram, similar to
bibingka of Tagalogs.
COURTSHIP AND WEDDINGS
O Riddles plays a great part in the Palawanun courtship.

O the bride’s parents will ask the bridegroom’s parents to solve
riddles which if answered satisfactorily to the bride’s parents,
the courtship will continue to the next level until the rites of
“paabot” or pamanhikan to Tagalogs
O When Paabot is reached and then the final stage is the
wedding ceremony.
O the village head is called “panlima” meaning judge. It is the
eldest man, they lead the family and also the village. He also
exercises control through traditional law called “adaw”
O the family is the basic unit of Palawanun society
O Loyalty is kept to the group or area to which the family head
or the Father
O In their society, deep respects the elders is the guideline for
hierarchy of relationships between siblings and even group
members.
BELIEFS
O They believe in the spirits or anitos who control their lives. This
is expressed in their ritual called “pagdiwata”
CAVITENO
HISTORY
O Cavite got its name from the Filipino work Kawit, which means
hook, owing to the hook-shaped mass of land recorded on the
old Spanish maps.

O The province is also regarded as the “heartland of the


Revolution”- “pugad ng kagitingan”
O Caviteño takes extreme pride in being a Caviteño.

O They are identifiable by their accent, their Tagalog/Chabacano


vocabulary, their well known fiery temper and fearless
reputation, their violent temper which can explode like an
angry volcano and their readiness to redness any grievence pr
upload honor and name.

O chavacano has its spanish meaning “poor” “common” or “low


quality”.
BELIEFS
O Cavitenos believe that sweeping the floor during evening is a
bad luck. They believe that as you brush off all the wastes so do
luck will go out of your home.

O “dapit-pari”- prays for the dead
O “dapit-senyales”- officiated by sacristan to lead
the prayer.
O avoiding mirror in the funeral
O “pagpag”
Cultural Rituals
O Karakol Dance
-A street dancing with their patron
saint being paraded on the streets
followed by fluvial procession.
O Sanghiyang / Sayaw sa Apoy
-A pre colonial ritual celebrated by
firewalkers of Indang and Alfonso. It
is a fusion of the elements of folk,
religion, magic and Christian faith
O Live Via Crucis
-Via Crusis or ‘Station of the
Cross’ is a passion play done
during the Holy week or Holy
Tuesday to be specific.
O Marcidas Dance
-During the Marcidas Festival,
a procession in honor of the
image is simultaneously held
with the war dance of the
pirates.
