The document discusses the history, working, advantages and disadvantages of metal detectors.

Some early uses of metal detectors include locating bullets and other metal objects in patients' bodies in the late 19th century and finding unexploded bombs after World War 1.

A basic metal detector works by using a coil to generate a magnetic field when pulsed with electricity. This field induces eddy currents in nearby metal objects, which generate their own magnetic field and signal to indicate the presence of metal.

History
• Towards the end of the 19th century, many scientists and
engineers used their growing knowledge of electrical
theory in an attempt to devise a machine which would
pinpoint metal.
• In 1874, Parisian inventor Gustave Trouvé developed a
hand-held device for locating and extracting metal objects
such as bullets from human patients.
• In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell, Inspired by Trouvé,
developed a similar device to attempt to locate a bullet
lodged in the chest of American President James Garfield.
History

An early metal detector, in 1919, used to find unexploded bombs

in France after World War I
Introduction
• A metal detector is an electronic instrument that
detects the presence of metal nearby.
• Metal detectors are useful for finding metal
inclusions hidden within objects, or metal objects
buried underground.
• They often consist of a handheld unit with a sensor
probe which can be swept over the ground or other
objects.
Introduction
• If the sensor comes near a piece of metal this is
indicated by a changing tone in earphones, or a
needle moving on an indicator.
• Usually the device gives some indication of distance;
the closer the metal is, the higher the tone in the
earphone or the higher the needle goes.
• The main types of metal detectors are, beat-frequency
oscillation, very low frequency, pulse induction and
industrial.
Introduction
Working
• The operation of metal detectors is based upon the
principles of electromagnetic induction.
• Metal detectors contain one or more inductor coils
that are used to interact with metallic elements on the
ground.
• The single-coil detector illustrated below is a
simplified version of one used in a real metal
detector.
Working
Working
• A pulsing current is applied to the coil, which then
induces a magnetic field shown in blue.
• When the magnetic field of the coil moves across
metal, such as the coin in this illustration, the field
induces electric currents (called eddy currents) in the
coin.
• The eddy currents induce their own magnetic field,
shown in red, which generates an opposite current in
the coil, which induces a signal indicating the
presence of metal.
Advantages
• They are used in airports to screen passengers,
checking bags in public places and in public events.
• They are used in food processing industries to detect
fragments of metal so as to avoid food contamination.
• They are used in finding reinforcement bars inside the
walls.
Disadvantages
• Metal detector may give a false alarm incase an
individual carries a metal object such as phone, watch
or a toy causing unnecessary panic.
• Metal detector may give a false alarm incase an
individual carries a metal object such as phone, watch
or a toy causing unnecessary panic.
• A metal detector is not safe with people who had to
get a pacemaker or replacements such as a knee
replacement.
Conclusion
• Metal detection is a nice hobby for individuals who
may wish to find buried treasure, jewelry and coins
which have been left behind on beaches, parks and
historical relics.
• Seasoned and beginner’s hunters requires detectors that
offer the best features so as to make their expeditions
very successful.
• Determination of the ways in which the purchaser of a
metal detector will use it is very essential so as to help
in choosing and buying the product and its accessories.
