Course description: Reading Skill
 Purpose: Students will be able to comprehend lengthier texts on diverse
academic topics by applying appropriate reading strategies.
 Themes: Readings in Sociology, psychology, marketing, health and
nutrition, and history.
 Content knowledge: Several readings per chapter theme facilitate
sustained content reading. Content skill building is present in every
chapter: from the scientific method to analysis of author’s intent and
purpose.

 Competencies to demonstrate:
 Competency 1: The student will read academic texts with general education content.
 Competency 2: The students will adjust reading strategies according to text.
 Competency 3: The student will analyze the use of facts and examples to support and explain
generalizations, statements of theory, and implicit main ideas or assumptions.
 Competency 4: The student will use a wide range of textual clues to identify text style and structure
(method of development) of a reading with particular attention to commonalities and differences found
across disciplines.
 Competency 5: The student will develop vocabulary by applying effective strategies to clarify, analyze,
and learn the meaning of new words in non-literary text, and the students will understand the figurative
use of language in literary text.
 Competency 6: The student will discriminate, select, and learn important words pertinent to specific
academic reading contexts.
 Competency 7: The student will demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills when reading.
 Competency 8: The student will understand and discuss common cultural references.
 Competency 9: The student will apply effective study skill strategies.

Communication 3
Course description: writing Skill
 Purpose: Students will be able to compose (that is, comprehend, select, plan, and draft) and produce
lengthier texts on diverse academic topics by applying appropriate writing strategies.
 The students learn to explain what, why and how as they follow a three-step writing process: Gathering
Information, Focusing and Organizing, and Writing, Editing, and Revising.
 In Chapter 1, the students learn and write paragraphs about advertising methods. In Chapter 2, the students
learn about web design as they evaluate commercial websites. Chapter 3 focuses on therapeutic and/or
surgical techniques related to vision, hearing, and taste loss. Chapter 4 requires students to research
information, interview experts, and write about the effects of college stress on first-year students. In Chapter
5, students learn about archeological and anthropological mysteries as they review the writing process and
strategies they learned in the previous chapters. Throughout the book, grammar points are integrated with the
writing assignments instead of being taught in isolation.

 Competency 2: The students will adjust writing skills and strategies according to academic audience(s) and purpose(s), specifically
in comprehending, selecting, planning, drafting, and revising.
 Competency 3: The student will develop, produce, administer, collate, and report on surveys and use such primary data to support
and explain main ideas in their writing.
 Competency 4: The student will practice a wide range of textual clues for academic readers to help them understand the meaning and
structure (that is, patterns of organization) of the written text, including sentence connectors, signal words, and pronoun reference.
 Competency 5: The student will learn that the main purposes of academic writing are (a) demonstrate knowledge in academic
contexts and (b) persuade the instructor or evaluator of that knowledge.
 Competency 6: The student will write accurate Standard English, including proofreading and editing grammar and sentence
structure, appropriate to the level.
 Competency 7: The student will select, discriminate, and present Internet and library materials in specific academic reading and
writing contexts.
 Competency 8: The student will demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills when writing.
 Competency 9: The student will understand, discuss, and write about common academic cultural references.
 Competency 10: The student will continue and explain the use of study skills, learning styles, and strategies necessary when writing
academic purposes.
Oral Communication Skill

Course description: Oral communication

 Purpose: Students will be able to develop communication,


organization, and pronunciation skills necessary for
effective academic presentation and discussion with an
introduction to lecture note taking.
 Academic focus: Humanities, Computer Science, Social
Science, Business, Social Psychology and Ethics.

 Competencies to demonstrate:
 Competency 1: The student will speak with sufficient accuracy and fluency to ensure comprehension in many
professional and academic situations.
 Competency 2: The students will speak with intelligible pronunciation, stress and intonation.
 Competency 3: The student will demonstrate the ability to deliver presentations in classroom settings and
explain and support opinions.
 Competency 4: The student will speak extemporaneously on diverse topics.
 Competency 5: The student will paraphrase basic information or opinions from original sources and credit the
source.
 Competency 6: The student will take notes during instructor lectures and student presentations and summarize
the content.
 Competency 7: The student will edit and correct his or her own spoken English while participating in academic
tasks such as classroom presentations or small group discussions.
 Competency 8: The student will adjust his or her listening strategies to the task at hand.
 Competency 9: The student will demonstrate analytical listening skills.
Class rules
Textbooks are required for this course. You also need to have a good dictionary.

Attendance is required. After 6 consecutive absences without notification, the instructor may drop you from the class.

Punctuality is required.

Homework is required. Instructors reserve the right to require graded or non-graded supplementary work in class or as homework

Dropping/adding, or withdrawing from a class is the student’s responsibility. Instructors may also initiate drops for no-shows and
non-attendance.

Student records will be kept for one additional semester. Inquiries regarding grades must be presented within this time.

Ifa student is absent, he/she must call another student in the class, or the instructor, to find out the work done and the homework. He/she
must come prepared for the next class.
Submit your assignments on time (late assignment is not allowed) (if late -1 per day)
An active participation is encouraged
Grading policies
Students will be evaluated as following:
Student’s progress – 70%

Attendance - 30

Assignment - 40

Final exam -30%
