Organizing

MUSICAL FORMS
Principles/Technique
that creates musica
form repetition
OBJECTIVE
1. Define contrast in musical
notation
2. Explain the importance of
contrast in creating music;
and
3. Analyse the song by
identifying the types of
contrast
What is form?
Form is organization of
musical elements in a
piece or performance,
including rhythm, melody,
dynamics, texture and
timbre, and how they
are held together.
In a musical composition,
pitch, tone color ,dynamics,
rhythm, melody and texture
interact to produce a
sense of shape
and structure.
REPETITION
When the same thing is
repeated over and over again.
Musical repetition appeals to
the pleasure we get in recognizing
and remembering something, and
the repetition of melodies or
extended sections is a technique
widely used for binding a
composition together.
Importance of Repetition
1. To establish guideposts
throughout the performance
2. To have clearer form
3. To have a better recall
4. To bind composition together

OBJECTIVE
1. Define symmetry in musical
notation
2. Explain the importance of
symmetry in creating music;
and
3. Analyse the song by
identifying the types of
symmetry
SYMMETRY
Symmetry

• The quality of something that

has two sides or halves that are
the same or close in size, shape,
and position.
“Symmetry can be discovered in
unimaginable places, it is
everywhere and music is definitely
no exception.- German Sanchez
Uriarte
Two basic ways i
which symmetry
realized
1.Reflection -simplest symmetry.
Vertical Horizontal
2. Translation is when something has
undergone a movement, a shift or a slide, in
a specified direction through a specified
distance without any rotation or reflection.
Melodic Symmetry
Song might repeat a
short melodic idea, once in a
downward and upward
direction.
Pitch Translation
• Involves adding an interval to music
notes that leaves the frequency
variations unchanged.
Octave Translation
• Involves adding eight tones
interval.
Pitch Reflection
• This has to do with consonance
between different pitch values.
Lyrical Symmetry
• We notice it when a song’s lyric
ends the way it begins.
• But you can also achieve lyrical
symmetry by using similar words
and phrases thought out a song.
Lyrical Reflection-
(Prosody)Word Painting
Lyrical Translation
• Similar Ending
• Tells a story
• Reiterating emotion
Examples:
Look Away by By Diane Warren
Uptown Girl By Billy Joel
Rhythmic Symmetry

The symmetry comes

through when you hear the
guitar acting as a kind of “
answer to verse phrases.
Importance of Symmetry
• Gives more obvious sense of
form and make you song more
memorable.

The Police
Verse 1:
Young teacher, the subject
Of school girl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be

Refrain:
Inside her, there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking, she's so close now
This girl is half his age

Chorus:
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
