DRILL
1. To promote safety culture to building/facility
occupants during the conduct of building
evacuation drill (earthquake.)

3. Roles of Coordinators
1. Have the following information available:
• total number of residents;
• total number of the people occupying each building/floor /level
and occupants with special needs (sick, old, disabled) and their
location.

2. Acquire the most recent ground layout or plan/map.


• Identify area for temporary refuge of injured.
• Staging point for emergency response.
• Identify area for evacuated building / facility occupants

3. Determine how many persons will be evacuated-


1 square meter = 3 persons)
4. Obtain a building layout/floor plan for each
facility / building that shows the rooms,
corridors, staircases and exit points.

Roles of Team Leaders:
1. Conduct facility survey on emergency exit routes ( look for hazards)
such as:
• Hanging, unstable objects/structures,
• Condition of power lines and utility poles,
• Narrow alleys between building, elevators, corridors that are too
narrow,
• Blockages along the corridors and exit points.
2. Suggest corrections or improvements to the
current set-up (e.g. clean-up stuff that block
the corridors and exit points must always
remain unblocked)
3. Disseminate information relative to emergency response
activities.
4. Direct building occupants in evacuating to building going to
designated evacuation area.
5. Report to coordinator whether/building/floor/level/facility is
cleared.
6. Accounting of evacuated building/facility occupants
Sample Computation in the Determination of Evacuation Area

No of Occupants : 1,312 persons


Assumption : 3 persons per sq.m.

Area Needed : 1,312 = 437 sq. m

For Five (5) Buildings


No of Occupants per Building : 184 persons
Assumption : 3 persons per sq.m.
Total No. of Persons: 5 x 184 = 920 persons

Area Needed : 920 = 306.67 sq. m

Assumption:
• Time to take to evacuate
from each floor to the stairs…... 15 – 20 seconds
• Time to take the service stairs
from each floor ……………………… 15 – 20 seconds

• Time to take to evacuate the building


20 sec. + 20 sec. = 40 seconds
x 33 floors ........... 1320 seconds
or 22 minutes

If you’re on a SIDEWALK NEAR BUILDINGS,


duck into a doorway
to protect yourself from
falling bricks, glass,
plaster, and other debris.

If you’re DRIVING, pull over to the side of the road


and stop. Avoid overpasses, power lines, and other
hazards. Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking is
over.

If you’re in a CROWDED STORE OR OTHER


PUBLIC PLACE, do not rush for exits. Move away
from display shelves containing objects that could fall.

If you’re in the CHURCH OR THEATER, stay in


your seat and protect your head with your arms. Do
not try to leave until the shaking is over, then leave in
a calm, orderly manner. Avoid rushing toward exits.

If you’re in the KITCHEN, move away from the


refrigerator, stove, and overhead cupboards. ( Take
time now to anchor appliances, and install security
latches on cupboards door to reduce hazards )
