+ Gerund (Ving)
S + Verb + ……
+ to infinitive (V1)
Sometimes in a sentence, one verb followed by another verb. For example,
I want to buy a car. The first verb is ‘want’ the second verb is ’buy’.
There are possible patterns in sentence like this. For example:
a. I want to buy a car

b. I hate driving
In sentence ‘a’ followed by an infinitive (V1)

In sentence ‘b’ followed by a gerund (V-ing)
The verb pattern are dependent upon the first verb
There are several different types of verb pattern, and each pattern can
have a different meaning
REMEMBER IN A SENTENCE, THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE VERB, SO IF YOU WANT TO
MAKE TWO VERBS IN ONE SENTENCE, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE WHETHER YOU’RE
GOING TO USE “TO+V1” OR “VING”.
 In Bahasa Indonesia you can say “SAYA INGIN MEMBELI ROTI”

Subject Verb Verb Object
 However, in English you CAN’T say “I WANT BUY A BREAD” because

the CORRECT one is “I WANT TO BUY A BREAD”.
 One more example:
 In Bahasa Indonesia, you can say “SAYA MENIKMATI BERMAIN DI LAPANGAN INI”

 In English you CAN’T say “I ENJOY PLAY IN THIS FIELD” because the correct one is “I ENJOY
PLAYING IN THIS FIELD.
A: Wait wait wait, the first one you use to V1, but here you use Ving??????? WHY?????
B: There are some words if you find TWO VERBS in one sentence must be followed by to V1
and some of them are followed by Ving.
A: How do we know that?
B: By remembering all that words  , as the time goes by you will know which verbs are
followed by to V1 and which ones are followed by Ving. The key success is READ, READ, and
READ.
Remember, you only change the second Verb, not the first one/ yang kalian rubah adalah
VERB yang kedua, bukan yang pertama. Look at the first verb, after that you can decide
whether you use to V1 or Ving.

EXAMPLE
 SAYA INGIN BEKERJA DENGAN Dr. BROWN
Correct: I want to work with Dr. Brown
Incorrect: I want work with Dr. Brown
Incorrect: I to want work with Dr. Brown
Incorrect: I want working with Dr. Brown
 MARIA MEMUTUSKAN PERGI BERSAMA MAYA KEMARIN SORE

Correct: Maria decided to go out with Maya last evening
Incorrect: Maria decided go out with Maya last evening
Incorrect: Maria to decided go out with Maya last evening
Incorrect: Maria decided going out with Maya last evening
Other examples
Jim hopes to leave the class soon
Wendy might agree to change the schedule
They want to buy a new house
I would like to read your book later on.
I have tried to persuade him to join our team.
Etc.
Whatever the tenses are, if you find two verbs you have to
change the second verbs into “to+V1” or “Ving” depend on
what the first verb is.

Consider imagine
Etc………
We often use the verb go + -ing for sports and activities.
I go swimming everyday , I go shopping at the weekend.
EXAMPLE
 SAYA TIDAK KEBERATAN BEKERJA DENGAN JOHN
Correct: I don’t mind working with John.
Incorrect: I don’t mind work with John.
Incorrect: I don’t minding working with John.
Incorrect: I don’t mind to work with John.
 SETIAP ORANG SUKA PERGI KE PESTA

Correct: Everyone loves going to parties.
Incorrect: Everyone loves go to parties
Incorrect: Everyone loving going to parties.
Incorrect: Everyone loves to go to parties.
Other examples:
I enjoy working on the airlines.
Henry is considering changing his job.
 She hates driving her own car.
Whatever the tenses are, if you find two

verbs you have to change the second verbs
into “to+V1” or “Ving” depend on what the
first verb is.
