PROTEINS AND RECENT

DEVELOPMENTS
CONCERNING PROTEINS
PREPARED BY:
BARLISO, LOVE FATE
Proteins are one of the most
important and resourceful
biomolecules that find applications
in health, industry, medicine,
research, and biotechnology.
PROTEIN MISFOLDING
It is a common cellular event that can occur
throughout the lifetime of a cell, caused by
different events including genetic mutations,
translational errors,
abnormalprotein modifications, and incomplete
complex formations
WHAT CAUSES A PROTEIN TO FOLD?

• Hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions

The cell is an aqueous (water-filled) environment.
Some amino acids have polar (hydrophilic) side
chains while others have non-polar (hydrophobic)
side chains.
THE PROTEOPATHIES

In medicine, proteopathy refers to a
class of diseases in which certain proteins
become structurally abnormal, and
thereby disrupt the function of cells,
tissues and organs of the body.
WHAT ARE THE DISEASES CAUSED BY
PROTEIN?
• Alzheimer’s Disease

• Parkinson’s Disease
• Huntington’s Disease

• Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
• Cystic Fibrosis

• Gaucher’s Disease
SYMPTOMS

• Fatty Liver
• Skin, Hair and Nail Problems
• Loss of Muscle Mass
• Greater risk of bone fractures
• Stunted growth in children
• Increased Security of Infections
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
• Protein Engineering Strategic Utilization Methods
-Better stability
-Increased Catalyic Activity
-Wide range of Applicability of proteins
