WHO WERE THE ANGLO-
SAXONS?
The Anglo-Saxons came to Britain in ships
across the North Sea. They remained there
from around AD 410 to 1066.
They were a mix of tribes from Germany,
Denmark and the Netherlands. The three
biggest were the Angles, the Saxons and
the Jutes. The land they settled in was
'Angle-land', or England.
If we use the modern names
for the countries they came
from, the Saxons were
German-Dutch, the Angles
were southern Danish, and the
Jutes were northern Danish.
WHY DID THE ANGLO-SAXONS
COME TO BRITAIN?
To fight: Some Anglo-Saxons were
warriors who enjoyed fighting.
They thought the Britons were
weak and easy to beat without
the Romans around.
To farm: Many Anglo-Saxons came
peacefully, to find land to farm.
Their homelands in Scandinavia
often flooded so it was tough to
grow enough food back there.
Anglo-Saxons technology changed
the shape of English agriculture.
To make new homes: Whole
families set sail across the sea
to live in Britain. They brought
tools, weapons and farm
animals with them and built
villages with new homes.
They were invited: With Picts and Scots
attacking from the north, the Britons
invited some Anglo-Saxons to help
defend them. At first, this is what they
did, but they soon betrayed the
Britons, turning on them for their land
and resources. The Anglo-Saxons went
on to take over the country and stayed
in control for about 600 years.
CULTURE
The Anglo-Saxons were great craft workers. They
made intricate jewellery, musical instruments and
homemade toys and games.
They were also keen storytellers. They would gather
together in feasting hallsands tell thrilling stories.
Often their stories would be accompanied by
music played on an instrument called a lyre.
The Saxons liked to play with words too. They
amused themselves by telling clever riddles.
Anglo-Saxon jewellers made brooches, beads and
gold ornaments.
Anglo-Saxon history tells of many Viking raids. The first
Viking raid recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was
around AD787. It was the start of a fierce struggle
between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings.
Over time the Vikings took control of several Anglo-
Saxon kingdoms. Eventually the Anglo-Saxons and
Vikings made a peace agreement, but the fighting
continued for many years.
The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons divided up Britain with the
Anglo-Saxons living mainly in the west and the Vikings
in an area to the east, known as the Danelaw.
