PRESENTATION
ON
SOFTWARE & HARDWARE
CHARACTERISTICS
OF
COMPUTER SYSTEM
What is a Computer?

 Computer is an programmable machine that receives input, stores &

manipulate
data/information & provide
output in a useful
format.
 Architecture of computer
– Control unit
– ALU unit
– I/P & O/P unit
– Memory
Basic Requirement of Computer
System

 HARDWARE :-
– Hardware refers to a physical piece of a computer.
– This could be a hard drive, monitor, memory chip, or
CPU.
– The key idea is that the item is something you can
touch (means tangible in nature)
HARDWARE

 Motherboard:-
– also known as a Main board.
– it is the central or primary circuit board making up a
complex electronic system, such as a modern computer.
– Other components of the computer such as external
storage, control circuits for video display and sound, and
peripheral devices are typically attached to the
motherboard via ribbon cables, other cables(data bus), and
power connectors
HARDWARE

 CPU :-
– Is also called processor, is the component in a digital
computer that interprets computer program instructions
and processes data.
– It performs the following basic operations; fetch,
decode, execute and store.
– CPU these days come in different types; like the 32-bit
and 64-bit processors or the single-core and multi-core
systems.
– The major CPU manufacturers are Intel and AMD.
HARDWARE

 RAM :-
– The CPU relies on RAM for most of its memory
operations.
– RAM allows the stored data to be accessed in any
order-that is, at random, not just in sequence.
– It is considered main memory or primary storage: the
working area used for loading, displaying and
manipulating applications and data.
HARDWARE

 HARD DISK:-
– Hard disk is the storage device used in computer
systems.
– It provides quick access to large amount of data.
– Unit of hard disk are Gigabytes/Terrabytes.
SOFTWARE

 It is the collection of computer programs and related data

that provide the instructions telling a computer what to do.
 It is intangible, meaning it "cannot be touched".
 There are 2 types of softwares -
– Application Softwares
– System Softwares.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE

 Is also known as an application, is computer software

designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple
related specific tasks.
 Examples of Application Softwares are –
– Enterprise software,
– Accounting software,
– Office suites,
– Graphics software,
– Media players, etc.
SYSTEM SOFTWARE

 System software is usually not what a user would buy a

computer for - instead, it can be seen as the basics of a
computer which come built-in or pre-installed.
 Specific kinds of system software include:
– Utility software,
– BIOS,
– Boot Loaders,
– Drivers, etc.
OPERATING SYSTEM

 An OS is the software that provides interface/platform b/w

end user and computer hardware
 It lets you execute programs, view media and other things
similar to it.
 It also performs the processes which the computer and the
OS need to run.
 It needs to handle other things as well like the hard
drive, which can be a HDD, the memory, the processor,
graphics or video cards
 allow convenient uses.
TYPES OF O.S. AVAILABLE IN
MARKET

 Microsoft Windows,
 Macintosh Operating System,
 Linux.
MICROSOFT WINDOWS

 Windows easily provides updations,

 Large amount of Microsoft windows user there is a
much larger selection of available softwares
programs, utilises and games.
 It includes its own help selection, has vast amt. of
available online documentation and help.
 Vulnerable to virus and other attacks.
MACINTOSH O.S.

 Mac OS is the operating system for Apple computers.

 It has a highly polished user interface, takes very little
effort to use.
 Unfortunately, it isn't as popular as Windows,
 MacOS runs only on Apple computers, and the whole
package tends to be more expensive than the Windows
equivalent for the same power.
LINUX

 Linux O.S. is more secure than other O.S. available in

market.
 The Linux operating system is a free software program
that you can use instead of Windows.
 Linux is an alternative operating system for personal
computers and servers.
 It competes mainly against Microsoft's Windows.
CONCLUSION

 Best O.S. is Linux in terms of security and ease of use.

 For a normal computer minimum h\w requirement which
is available in market are as follows
– Minimum RAM 1GB DDR2
– HDD min 250 GB
– Processor dual core 2.1 Ghz.
