The Burj Al Arab hotel is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It stands on an artificial island and is connected to the mainland by a private bridge. The hotel is shaped like a sail of a boat and is 321 meters tall, housing 60 floors within its 111,500 square meter area. It was designed to withstand strong winds and storms and its foundations consist of 250 concrete piles that are 45 meters long, drilled deep into the seabed to support the structure. The exterior is comprised of a steel exoskeleton and the interior features a woven glass facade.

The key takeaways are that Burj Al Arab is located on an artificial island in Dubai and is designed to resemble the sail of a boat. It is 321 meters tall and exclusively used as a luxury hotel.
The main structural systems used are a steel exoskeleton, concrete walls and a concrete core.
The architects addressed wind loads through the streamlined shape of the building, steel trusses, tuned mass dampers and a translucent fabric wall.
BURJ AL ARAB
Building Name : Burj-Al-Arab Hotel
Also called as : Arab Sail Location : Dubai, United Arab Emirates Chief Architect : Tom Wright Floors : 60 Floor Area : 111,500 m2 Height : 321 m [It is the third tallest building in the world.] Used exclusively as a hotel. Stands on an artificial island 280 m (920 ft) . Connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. It is an iconic structure, designed to symbolize Dubai's urban transformation and to mimic the sail of a boat. GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS Wind Effects Dubai’s Geographic location subjects the hotel to severe weather conditions including strong winds and occasional violent thunderstorms. Due to the structure’s proximity to its adjacent hotel resort, wind tunnel testing was considered to ensure a safe design. Wind speed of 45 meters per second, under the recommendations of Dubai Municipality, was adopted for the design. Seismic Impact Dubai It is not located in an earthquake intensive zone. However, southern Iran which is only 100 miles away to the north is subjected to moderate earthquake risk and in turn which could create tremors in Dubai if a seismic event were to occur in Iran. To reinforce the structure from any potential swaying, two tuned mass dampers, weighing about 2tonnes each, limit vibrations in the tubular steel mast that projects 60 m above the building. CONTRUCTION OF THE ISLAND Island rises 7 and a half meters above the waves. Main concern was protection of island, waves breaking over island and impacting the structure. Initial proposal was by rock which was easily available and supported the existing technologies. Architect-Wright however rejected the proposal because this would make island too high . Concrete blocks worked like Island protected by concrete sponge. honeycombs shape solid blocks As wave hit the block, water pass designed to reduce the impact of waves. inside and turn around in itself and hence force is FOUNDATION It was very challenging to design foundations to Support the mega structure-270 miles off coast, 320 mt in height on man-made island(6mts from Arabian Sea) resistant to earthquake (falling under range of major Faultline) and wind that blows 90 miles per hour. Location on a reclaimed land was added challenge. The building is built on sand, unlike the other tall buildings built on rocks. It is supported on 250 numbers of 1.5 meters diameter columns that drilled deep into the sea. Each column is a steel reinforced concrete foundation pile with 45 meter in length. Load analysisTotal dead load : 2850,000,000 lbs LOAD ANALYSIS Total live load : 86,160,000 lbs Total load on foundation : 150,000 lbs/SF Gravity loads Maximum horizontal wind load : 2,366,000 lbs Building is built to a seismic ground acceleration of 0.2 times the gravity. These loads are transferred down from the core and wings to the foundation. Central core transmits gravity loads. The structure transfers vertical loading through the large spine. The most direct way for the vertical load to reach the ground. Secondly ,transfer through the curved edge. The steel trusses running alongside the structure also helps in deflecting the horizontal loads. WIND LOADS Building is built to withstand a 50 year wind of 100 miles per hour. 3 tube steel trusses. Cross bracing and curved truss arch. Teflon coated fiberglass fabric The shape of the building lowers the wind forces more effectively than a square building because of the streamlined V and curved fabric atrium wall. Installed 11 invisible heavy weight of 5 tonne weight called Tune mass damper at vulnerable points inside the exoskeleton. When wind blows and the vortex shedding starts to create dangerous vibrations the tune weight will swing inside the structure and bring down the effect of wind load. Translucent fabric wall of the atrium helps transfer loads STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS EXOSKELETON The hotel structure is composed of concrete walls, a steel Exoskeleton and a concrete core. The exoskeleton is made up of two legs on both sides of the building. The structure is made up of two built up H sections of 1.8M wide by 4.5M deep plate girder connected by lattice braced members. Diagonal are huge tubular triangular trusses tied to two legs to the central core. The diagonal trusses can contract and expand up to5 cm in 24 hours. -The exoskeleton bows are provided with tuned mass damper at 11 critical points with 5ton weight which swings to damp down the vibrations caused by vortex shedding. FACADE Fabric wall stretched between horizontal beams Stretch woven double skinned Teflon coated woven glass fibre screen. Glazed curtain wall with aluminium cladding Steel structure cladded with 6mm composite aluminium panels THANK YOU
