Associate Professor
OBJECTIVE

 The is a basically a transceiver that works in the frequency which is in the

special unused range that is operated by service provider or at a frequency
that is different than the one that is being used.
 For the detection of lost mobile SNIFFER plays a vital role.
 The sniffer device has to be designed precisely and size should reduced for
easy mobility for the purpose of detection.
INTRODUCTION

The main scope of this paper is to detect the lost mobiles. Each and
every day thousands of mobiles get misplaced or lost, though effective
way for the blocking of the lost mobile to prevent unauthorized person
from making and receiving the calls has been done by the manufacturers
of the mobile with the help of International Mobile Equipment Identifier
(IMEI) has been done but however there has been no development or very
little progress for the detection of the misplaced mobile phone.
EXISTING APPROACH

Ethernet networks are shared communication channels; the network

interface of a computer on this type of network can see all the packets
transmitted on the segment it present on . Every packet has a header telling
the receiver of the packet. Under usual operating events, only the machine
with that proper address is supposed to allow the packet. However, the
Network Interface Card (NIC) can be set to a particular mode called
promiscuous mode to receive all packets on the wire.
NEW APPROACH
 The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique
identification or serial number that all mobile phones and smart phones
have.
 It is normally 15 digits long.
 The IMEI number can be found on the silver sticker on the back of your
phone, under the battery pack, or on the box your phone came in.
DESIGNING OF THE SNIFFER

 The sniffer device can be called as a mobile based station that includes the
following important components:

1. Sniffer base station

2. Unidirectional antenna

3. Tracking software
SMALL BASE STATION
 Facilitates wireless communication between the user equipment and
network.
 Sniffer is a small base station which includes transceiver section.
 It operate at a frequency that is much different from the frequency of the
current cell.
 Frequency generated by transceiver is around 900MHz(VHF).
 Hence a proper cooling of the oscillator circuit, generating the high
frequency, has to be ensured.
UNIDIRECTIONAL ANTENNA

 Antenna is a device which works at specified frequency range for

transmitting or receiving the data signal.
 Acts as the eyes of the sniffer for the purpose of the direction.

 Transmission power depends on lobe pattern which varies from one

antenna to another.
SOFTWARE FOR TRACKING
 Software helps in the process of creation of the data base and this is mainly
done using a random access memory(RAM).
 Lost IMEI number is embedded in the chip.

 It has the input as the IMEI number of lost mobile phone from the RAM
using the SQL query.
 Programming is done with C or Java, but C is most preferred as it is easily
embedded within the chips.
WORKING OF SNIFFER

 The entire working of the sniffer is categorized in two phases:

1. Before sniffer increases the frequency

2. After sniffer increases the frequency
Before sniffer increases the frequency
After sniffer increases the frequency
ADVANTAGES

 Useful in detection of lost mobile on a large scale.

 Overall effective cost of the design and the detection is low.

 Low power consumption.

APPLICATIONS

• Using this information, a network manager can keep traffic flowing

efficiently.
• A sniffer can also be used legitimately or illegitimately to capture data
being transmitted on a network.
• A router with a sniffer, however, may be able to read the data in the packet
as well as the source and destination addresses.
• Sniffers are often used on academic networks to prevent traffic bottlenecks
caused by file sharing applications.
LIMITATIONS

 Power of the mobile should be good enough.

 Mobile should not been in shadow region.
CONCLUSION

Since the boom of the mobile phone for the purpose of the
communication there has been a large number of complaints regarding the
mobile phone that is being lost and there has been no effective method
developed for detecting the lost device. The given sniffer technology dealt
the idea of development “Sniffer for the detection of lost Mobile Phones”
paves a way by means of which the lost mobile phones can be recovered.
