Theater Arts
• collaborative form of fine art that
uses live performers, typically actors
or actresses, to present the
experience of a real or imagined
event before a live audience in a
specific place, often a stage.
Contemporary Theater
• Embodies current approaches in interpreting
life to become a new living experience
• Employs new technologies influenced by the
changing physical landscape and lifestyle
• Privileges the interpretation of common day-to-
day experience as living experiences
transformed through sound, movement, words,
and visual representations of the contemporary
environment
Contemporary Theater
It can be identified through characteristics that
exhibit the following:
• Tradition-based forms using new idioms of
expression
• Functional use of local language
• Motifs and narratives
• Transformation of ordinary spaces into spaces for
performance and community participation
• Collaboration of new artists and well-known artists
• Primacy of function
• Relevance of the performance to the audience
Contemporary Theater
It has opened its doors to multi-art performances
which have encouraged non-theater artists to
create original plays based on their real-life
experiences.
•Improvised plays- plays which have been
created in a short period using local experiences
and local cultural forms
•Devised plays- plays based on ideas and real
experiences if actors, without the aid of a written
script
Contemporary Theater
Improvisations developed from poetry such as
tula-dula/dula-tula, sabayang bigkas, rap, and flip
top, have garnered a top spot in popularity and
audience participation for original plays, since
they draw from a long tradition of using local
poetry’s discipline in interpreting social realities
and translating these into words, sound and
rhythm, movement and images drawn from the
local talinghaga.
Contemporary Theater
Southern Tagalog’s ARTIST utilized the “bola sa
kili-kili” acting style, inspired by the comedian
delle arte performances to re-tell stories of

Contemporary Performance
Poetry, which used to be merely a
required subject in class, has become a
popular mode of critical discussion
through the flip-top, a poetric joust
performed by youngsters in open
spaces. It is in consonance with the rap,
a poetic joust done in a syncopated
rhythm and made popular by singers
Francis Magalona, Andre E, and Gloc 9.
Conclusion
•Cyperspace has created a new world
of existence, innovating new forms of
communication as well as new forms
of dealing with daily life. Thus,
numerous forms have evolved in using
current sound and rhythm, movement,
words, and visuals in creating living
art experiences such as theater, dance,
and musical concerts.
