DID RIZAL RETRACT

(NEGATIVE SIDE)
Introduction
Several historians report that Rizal retracted his anti-Catholic ideas through
a document which stated: “I retract with all my heart whatever in my words,
writings, character as a son of the Catholic Church.” However, there are doubts
of its authenticity given that there is no certificate of Rizal’s Catholic marriage
to Josephine Bracken. Also there is an allegation that the retraction document
was forgery. Rizal did not retract, although there were many opinions and
evidence presented by various authors as to whether Rizal did or did not
retract. Nonetheless, until now there is no proof or any justification to end the
debate. Why would Rizal retract when he knows for a fact that even if he signs
the retraction paper he would still be executed? Since the Archbishop and
Jesuits cannot do anything to mitigate his penalty because the judicial process
involve was purely a military tribunal where civilians or church interference was
uncommon and not allowed.
Body
The issue about Jose Rizal alleged retraction of his belief has never
been proven true. Matter of fact the retraction may consider an insult to
what our National Hero had fought for. The idea itself is almost
blasphemous and improbable to his character and principles. Jose Rizal
was known for his strong conviction for human rights, spirit of discontent
over oppression, and great love for our country.

His writings are living proof of his stance, a letter to Mariano Ponce on
April 18, 1889 says: “…At the sight of those injustice and cruelties…I
swore to devote myself to avenge one day so many victims, and with this
idea in mind I have been studying and this can be read in all my works
and writings. God will someday give me and opportunity to carry out my
promise”.
Of the religious orders, he writes; “…the friars are not what they pretends to be
nor are they ministers to Christ the protector of the people, nor the support of the
Spanish government… don’t they show cruelty? Don’t they instigate the government
against the people? Don’t they manifest terror? Where are sanctity, protection, and
force?”

Jose Rizal was never an ordinary man. He knew that his crusade might cost his
own life. If you still can’t consider these writings as solid evidence of Rizal’s strong
opposition against the friars, the catholic in general, what was the purpose his death
then? In extraordinary man sacrificed his own life just for his fictitious writings that he
himself didn’t believe in? if you really consider he retracted, you might also start
questioning, what type of man he was. Now does he really deserve to be called the
National Hero?
SUMMARY :
There is no concrete evidence that our national hero DR. JOSE RIZAL committed
retraction. The speculations and accusations that was fabricated against him was a
clear manifestation of falsity to twist the truth. If there is retraction from the very
beginning the execution of Dr. Jose Rizal will never be part of our history. The
debate about his retraction will never end for it is an accusation that no one can
every justify.
CONCLUSION :
Dr. Jose Rizal's nationalism and patriotism can never be questioned he may not
be the typical hero that can be found in a bloody battle field but he is a
remarkable hero that is willing to die for his principle and love for his country. He
lives in what he believes he is a man that will always stand for the right and for the
truth and he took the courage to face death full heartedly for he knows what he is
fighting for is for the love of his nation. As a filipino we should be proud that our
national hero is a man of courage and principle. The retraction is a prevarication to
change the course of truth and to deceive filipino people that the hero that we look
up to is a traitor. But his death is a reminder of the truth that he died for our nation
and his death is a proof that Dr. Jose Rizal is a true hero and the retraction is a
distortion.
