REPORT SURVEY
SUMMARIZE AND REPORT
SURVEY
 The purpose of writing a survey report is to study
a research topic thoroughly, and
to summarize the existing studies in an organized
manner.
 It is an important step in any research project. On-
campus students may work as groups and are
required to do a presentation and submit a report.
STEP IN SUMMARIZING A REPORT

Skim the text to get a general idea of the topic.

Delete unnecessary or redundant material.
Find the main ideas in the text.
Find or create a topic sentence.
Substitute general or "umbrella" terms when
appropriate (for example, trees instead of oak, maple,
and pine)
STEPS IN SURVEY REPORT
 Break the report up into separate sections with
headings.
 Write a 1-2 page executive summary paraphrasing
the report.
 State the objectives of the survey in the
background section.
 Provide background information by explaining
similar research and studies.
STEPS IN EXPLAINING THE METHODS AND RESULTS

Explain how the study was conducted in the

methodology section.
Describe what type of questions were asked in the
methodology section.
Report the results of the survey in a separate section.
Point out any interesting trends in the results section.
KEY POINTS ON HOW TO SUMMARIZE AND REPORT
SURVEY THROUGH NARRATIVE ESSAY

Re-Read and Take Notes

Before you can begin writing your summary, you need to collect all the
information you plan to use in your summary.
Draft Your Introduction
Now that you have the information and have re-read the narrative so it is
fresh in your mind -- which will make referring to the text easier -- it's time
to craft your introduction. Your opening should be direct and succinct.
Make sure you state the title of the story as well as the name of the
author.

Draft the Body

Focus on the main character and how his strategies to resolve the conflict
drive the story.
Close With the Theme
Explain how the conflict gets resolved, which characters have changed
and the natures of their changes.
After the Draft
Now that your draft is complete, you have to edit and revise. Focus first
on structure: You've introduced the narrative clearly and thoroughly,
addressed every major event in the body and concluded with conflict
resolution and how it relates to the theme.
