The End of Renaissance
Many factors led to the end of the renaissance among of
which are religious turmoil and political change.

Renaissance is funded by the wealth of the Italians and the

roman catholic church. But war among the Italian provinces and
against other European countries depletes resources that support
the arts.
The widespread development of the humanities during the
renaissance opened the educated classes and even clergy to
question some of the church teachings and practices.
Allegations of corruption against the church disillusioned
many Christians including priests.
This brought about
the protestant
reformation where the
former members of the
catholic church led by
Martin Luther in 517 CE
rebelled against
the church and
formed their own
religion.
MARTIN LUTHER - was a
German professor
of theology composer,
priest, monk, and a
seminal figure in
the Protestant Reformation

NINETY-FIVE THESES is a list of

propositions for an
academic disputation written in
1517 by martin Luther, professor
of moral theology that started
the reformation, a schism in
the catholic church which

damage brought by the protestant reformation ,
decided to call on artist to creat artworks that will inspire
the masses bck to tehe catholic church, this was called
the counter reformation and with it thestart of new art era
called the baroque period.
Baroque Period

Baroque comes form the Portuguese word

barroco, which means “misshapen pearl”. It
was a derogatory term used by the 18th century
critics who consider its overly ornamental style
and details unpleasant compared with the
prevailing ordered and retrained aesthetics of
the 18th century. It has since lost its derogatory
meaning and is used to describe this period in
art history.
The Baroque style spread across Europe
in the 17th and 19th centuries. The style
was popularized primarily by the Catholic
Church due to a pronouncement at the
Council of Trent , wherein the members
of the council regarded art as a potent
force for communicating religious
themes and for fostering an emotional
involvement among the faithful amidst
the Protestant Reformation.

mirrored the dramatic and emotional impact of baroque
paintings. Sculptors give importance to texture to
highlight and emphasize the dark shadows mirroring the
baroque style of dramatic lighting. Baroque sculptures
seem to be in mid-action making the viewer a witness to
the event.
Baroque sculptures also meant to be viewed from
different angles. Each angle gives additional depth to the
appreciation of the artwork and further immerses the
