FIRST AID FOR COMMON
UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES
Name different COMMON
UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES that you
may encounter.
What can you do with these kinds of
injury?
FRACTURE – a break or crack in a bone.
Categorized as open and closed fracture

 Check the vital signs

 Do not move the injured part
 Stop bleeding if there is any
 If you have to move the person, immobilize the
broken part by splinting
 Seek help immediately.
DISLOCATION – a partial or complete
displacement of the bones
Call for help immediately
Splint the affected part
Do not try to move a dislocated part or
force it back into place
Apply ice on the injured part to reduce
swelling
SPRAIN – is a an injury to the
ligaments of a bone due to
accidental tearing or overstretching
STRAIN – is an injury to the muscles
which is a result of improper use of
the muscle.
REST the injured part
Apply ICE to the injured part
Apply COMPRESSION to the
injured part
ELEVATE the injury
HEAT EXHAUSTION – is
caused by loss of salt and
water due to excessively
high temperature. This may
lead to heatstroke and
even death.
Transport the victim to a cool
place
Give him/her plenty of water
Check for vital signs
Seek medical help
FOOD POISONING –
caused by consuming
food or drink that is
contaminated with
bacteria or viruses.
Help the person to lie down and
rest
Give him plenty of flavorless fluids
to drink and a bowl to use if he
vomits

continue until help arrives
DROWNING – happens when air cannot
get into the lungs because of water

 Lay the person on his/her back

 Check breathing and open the airway
 Give rescue breaths and chest compression if necessary
 If the person is breathing place him/het in the recovery
position
 Treat for hypothermia by removing clothes and covering with
a blanket
HEART ATTACK – is caused by a sudden
obstruction of blood supply to the part
of the heart muscles.
 Help the person sit or lie down with head elevated
 Call for medical help
 If
the person is conscious give him/her a full-dose
aspirin
 Constantly monitor the vital sign. Be prepared to
give rescue breath and chest compression
CHEMICAL BURNS – may occur when
electricity passes through the body

 Makesure that contact with electrical source is

broken
 Flood the sites of injury with plenty of water
 Wear disposable gloves and apply dressing over the
burn
 Call for medical help
 Reassure the victim and treat for shock
HEAT STROKE – is caused by a failure of the
“thermostat” in the brain to regulate body
temperature
 Move the person immediately to a cool place
 Remove outer clothing
 Call for medical help
 Wrap the person in cold, wet sheet until his temperature drops
 Replace the wet sheet with a dry one sheet
 Monitor vital signs
 Repeat the cooling process if the body temperature rises
STROKE – is a condition in which
the blood supply to a part of
the brain is suddenly and
seriously impaired by a blood
clot or ruptured blood vessel.
 Help the person lie down with head & shoulders slightly

 Loosen tight clothing
 Monitor vital sign and reassure the victim
 If the victim is unconscious give him rescue breathing and
chest compression
 Call for an ambulance or call for help
