OF ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURE
DESIGN APPROACH
Modern Architecture based upon innovative technologies of construction, It
emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World
War II until the 1980s.
• Use of glass, steel and reinforced concrete;
• “Form follows function” Louis H. Sullivan, 1896 "The Tall Office Building
Artistically Considered”.
• An embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament.

FEATURES OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE

• MODERNIST MATERIALS
Modern materials: reinforced concrete, steel frames, curtain walls and
ribbon windows.
• FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
Functional de5sign. Asymmetrical compositions with the use of
geometric forms, often with flat roofs. Emphasis on horizontal lines.
• OPEN PLAN INTERIORS
Light filled, open plan interiors, with a feeling of spaciousness.
Achieved through separation of the load bearing columns from the
walls surrounding the space.
• COMPLEX FORM/SHAPE.

Form & Shape

Form – External appearance that can be recognized
Shape – Refers to the characteristic outline of a plane
figure or the surface configuration of a volumetric form
Ex. “sphere” is form; “circle” is shape.

Regular & Irregular Forms

Regular – Parts related to one another, in a consistent and
orderly manner
Irregular – Parts are dissimilar in nature and related to one
another in an inconsistent and orderly
manner.

PRINCIPLES
PRINCIPLES OF
OF DESIGN
DESIGN
1. SYMMETRY
-Requires a balanced arrangement of equivalent patterns of form and
space on opposite sides of a dividing line or plane or about a center or
axis.
2. AXIS
-A line established by two points in space, about w/c forms and spaces
can be arranged in a regular or irregular manner.
3. HIERARCHY
-In most architectural compositions real differences exist among their
forms and spaces.
-Hierarchy by size
• A form or space may dominate an architectural composition by
being significantly different in size from all the other elements in
the composition
4. RHYTHM
-Movement characterized by a pattern reoccurrence of elements or motifs
of regular or irregular intervals.
5. REPITITION
-Rhythm incorporates the fundamental motion of repetition as a device to
organize forms and space in architecture.

TRANSFORMATION
TRANSFORMATION OF
OF FORM
FORM

SUBTRACTIVE – Transformed by subtracting portion of its

volume.
ADDITIVE – Addition of elements to its volume.
Radial Form – consists of linear forms that extend outward from
a centrally located
core element.

BASE PLANE – Horizontal plane. Elevated above the ground

plane. Visual community is maintained
Spatial continuity is interrupted
ARCHITECTURAL
ARCHITECTURAL INTERIOR
INTERIOR
1. SPACE
• Formless and diffuse
• Point, line, plane can be arranged to define space.
• In Architecture, linear columns, beams, planar walls, floors and roofs
2. INTERIOR SPACE
• Enclosure due to the bounding floor, wall and ceiling plane.
3. ENCLOSURE SYSTEM
• Building envelope: protects the shelter interior space
4. SHAPING INTERIOR SPACE
• Selection and arrangement of interior elements such that their visual relationships
define and
organize the interior space room.
5. CEILINGS
• Typically flat
• High ceilings
-Creates feeling of loftiness or grandeur
• Low ceilings
- Cave-like coziness and intimacy

INTERIOR

6. DOORWAY
• Provide physical access from one space to another
7. WINDOWS
• Let air/light into the interior space
8. STAIRWAYS
• Important form of spatial, transition between rooms
9. TEXTURE
• Specific quality of a surface that results from its three
dimensional structure
• Tactile texture
• Visual texture
10. COLOR
• An inherent visual property of all form.
• Hue, Value, Saturation

INTERIOR
11. WARM HUES/COOL HUES
12.COLOR SCHEME
• Structuring color groups accdg. to the certain visual
relationships among their attributes to hue, value,
intensity.
13. ANALOGOUS
• Use of two or more hues from the same quarter of the
color wheel
14. LIGHT
• Prime animator of interior
• W/o light, there would be no visible form, color or texture
nor any visible enclosure or interior space
15. AMBIENT LIGHTING
• Illuminates a room in a fairly uniform, generally diffuse
manner.
16. FOCAL LIGHTING
• Creates brighter areas within the ambient light levels of
space.
BUILDING
BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
TECHNOLOGY
1. CURTAIN WALL
• Thin, usually aluminum-framed wall, containing in-fills of glass, metal panels,
or thin stone.
2. LAMINATED WOOD
• Laminated wood is wood that has been cut into thin layers, then glued
together with the grain running parallel in each layer.
3. WOOD FLOORING OVER CONCRETE SLAB
• A common structural element of modern buildings, consisting of a flat,
horizontal surface made of cast concrete.
4. TRUSS
• A truss is an assembly of beams or other elements that creates a rigid
structure.
5. WOOD PANELLED WALL
• Panelling is a millwork wall covering constructed from rigid or semi-rigid
components. These are traditionally interlocking wood, but could be plastic or
other materials.
6. CARPET
• A textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached
to a backing.
