Education: Its Etymology
Education is made of Latin words “Educare and Educatum”,
which is made of words (E) + Duco.

The term “E” means to bring up, to rise, and to nourish…


The term “Duco” means to lead to progress… something
which is imposed from outside.

Hence, education connotes improvement of internal/inherited


abilities of children externally.
Meaning and Definition of Education
Education is the basic tool of human development.
a. innate abilities,
b. increment in knowledge & arts and behavioral
changes

Result: A civilized, cultured, and able citizen.

• the permanent process of teaching and learning in any society

What are the two processes in education?


a. form of process
b. result of that process

Note: Results of education process are expressed in the form of


knowledge, ability and behavioral change.
Realization

• Education is needed for a progressive society and


targeted to bring overall prosperity to the individual
by unfolding his full potentialities.
Philosophical Concept of Education
• Center of thought of philosophers is HUMAN.

• To define the PATH of human life and they consider education to be


essential tool for the acquisition of knowledge and development for
all this.

• Thus, education is the tool of attaining the Final Objective of human


life.

• Centre of thoughts of sociologists is SOCIETY. They look and
understand human in the context and perspective of its
society. They consider education as the means of
development of individual and society.

1. Education is a Social Process
• there is social interaction between two or more people, then they get
influenced by each other’s language, thought process, and behavior.
Influencing = Learning (predefined objectives) = Education

• the innate qualities of humans once immersed in the social and


natural environments, these qualities grow; thus, a change in
behavior.

2. Education is a Continuous Process.
• Education keeps on happening in the society. The system of
education keeps moving forward generations after generations. It
never takes rest.

3. Education is a Bi-polar Process.
• In the process of education, one side affects and another gets
affected. one pole affects (teacher) and another pole gets affected
(student).

• John Dewey: one psychological and another social. For him:


psychological refers to the interest, inclination and ability of the
learner and social means the social environment.

4. Education is the process of development.
• The innate human behavior is like animals, but with education,
his/her behavior is modified and refined.
• Education not only teaches humans to have synergy with
environment, but also develops their ability to create a conducive
environment suitable for them.

Proof: constant change in the lifestyle, thoughts, desires, likes, and in


the methods and tools of making an easy and comfortable life

5. Education is a Dynamic Process.


• humans keep developing its civilization and culture. This development
is handed over to the next generation and it serves as the bases of
some changes for a better society.

Proofs: In the academe, the set objectives, syllabus, method of


education, etc. are defined for a particular time period. But as society
keeps changing, education keeps accepting those changes and moves
forward. Thus, its objective, syllabus and method of education keep
changing as per requirement.

Conclusion:

• Education is purposive, social, continuous, dynamic, and


developmental in nature.

• It develops innate powers, skill sets, and brings about change


in its behavior; thus, it makes HUMANS civilized, cultured,
and able citizens.
