Definition, Goals, and Scope

 Define counseling.

 Discuss the application of counseling as a discipline


of art and a discipline of science.

 Enumerate and discuss the goals, nature and scope


of counseling.

1. A person seeing a counselor, a psychologist, a
psychiatrist, or any mental health practitioner has
mental illness.

2. Counseling means giving advice.

4. A counselor is a problem-solver.
 Defines Guidance and Counseling as “the profession
that involves the use of integrative approach to the
development of a well-functioning individual primarily
by helping him/her utilize his/her potentials to the fullest
and plan his/her present and future in accordance with
his/her abilities, interests, and needs.”
 It is regarded as the heart of the guidance services,
accomplished through a therapeutic relationship
between the counselor and the counselee.

 A dynamic process where both agents relate with each


other to try and see the whole picture of the situation,
arrive at similar understanding, and start on identifying
the counseling goals and how these will be achieved.
 Counseling is essentially both an art and a science.
(Nystul, 2011)
 An art because a counselor is like an artist who can be
flexible and creative with how he/she can reach and
relate with his/her client.
 A science as it practices objectivity and proper
methodological process.

Counseling
Assisting the clients in the following:
1. plan and work in a constructive manner in attaining
life success;
2. learn, anticipate, and react positively to issues
brought about by developmental changes;
3. express their uniqueness in diverse circumstances
through socially accepted integration of their
thoughts, feelings, and actions;
4. Respond with resilience to stress and be able to
buffer themselves from its negative impact on their
functioning;
5. Develop effective skills in relating with others in
order to enhance abilities in establishing harmonious
relationships;
6. Increase awareness of the self by identifying their
strengths and weaknesses;

Goals of Counseling
7. Become mindful of the realities of life and be able to
apply effective principles of coping and adjusting to
the different experiences they encounter in life;
8. Learn to seek for more options or choices to be well-
informed before making a decision; and
9. Achieve autonomy from counseling as they have
learned life skills.

Goals of Counseling
 You will gain an experience to practice resiliency and
learn to aim for emotional growth.

 Counseling programs aim to provide preventive


measures to you as client.

 Although counseling deals with a myriad of concerns,
the emphasis of the profession still lies on prevention
and goal orientation (Gladding, 2013).
 It focuses on the assistance of individuals of all ages in
all stages of development, assuring that the client will
be able to make wise decisions in life and find
meaning, purpose and actualization in what they do.
Thus, counseling promotes personal growth of clientele
and anticipates problems for prevention.

Nature and Scope of Counseling


 Counseling is different from guidance and
psychotherapy.
 Guidance focused on helping clients determine what
they value most, and from there choose the path that
they want to pursue.
 Psychotherapy deals with assessing, diagnosing, and
treating mental health problems.

Nature and Scope of Counseling


Suppose you have a friend who’s thinking
of dropping or cutting classes from your class,
how will you help him/her using the different
concepts of counseling?
1. Define counseling in two to three sentences.
2. Give at least five goals of counseling.
3. Give at least five scope of counseling.
Prepare a group demonstration of a situation in
which practitioners of counseling work together to assist
individuals, groups, or communities involved in difficult
situations which will be presented at the end of the
week.
The class will be grouped into three to perform the
following cases:
 Group 1: Post-disaster
 Group 2: Separation of parents
 Group 3: Cyber bullying
