ABSTRACT:-
 In this work, design and structural analysis of connecting was performed.
Connecting rod is one of the most important parts in engine assembly which
transfers energy from piston to crankshaft and convert the linear, reciprocating
motion of a piston into the rotary motion of a crankshaft. The connecting rod
primarily undergoes tensile and compressive loading under engine cyclic process.
 The connecting rod is the intermediate member between the piston and the
Crankshaft. Its primary function is to transmit the push and pull from the piston
pin to the crank pin, thus converting the reciprocating motion of the piston into
rotary motion of the crank. This thesis describes designing and Analysis of
connecting rod. Currently existing connecting rod is manufactured by using
STAINLESS STEELsteel
INTRODUCTION:-
 The connecting rod is the transitional part between the piston and the crankshaft.
Its essential capacity is to transmit the push and pull from the piston pin to the
crank pin, in this way changing over the reciprocating motion of the cylinder into
turning movement of the crank. The capacity of connecting rod is to transmit the
push of the piston to the crank shaft, and as the outcome the reciprocating motion
of the piston is interpreted into rotational movement of the wrench shaft. It
comprises of a pin–end, a shank section and a crank end. Pin end and crank end
pin holes are machined to allow exact fitting of bearings. One end of the
connecting rod is associated with the cylinder by the cylinder pin. Interfacing rods
are subjected to forces generated by mass and fuel combustion. These two
strengths result in axial load and bending stresses. An associating bar must be
equipped for transmitting axial tension, axial compression, and bending stress
brought about by the thrust and pull of the cylinder and by centrifugal force
MANFACTURING OF CONNECTING ROD:-

1.Connecting rods for automotive applications are typically manufactured by FORGING PROCESS.
2.Powder metal manufactured blanks have the advantage of being near net shape, reducing material waste.
However, the cost of the blank is high due to the high material cost.
OBJECTIVES :

 The objective of this project is to determine the total stress developed on the
connecting rod due to the force applied on the connecting rod from the power
stroke of a Spark-ignition engine. And also to study the effects of buckling load of
the same magnitude as that of the power stroke applied on the connecting rod from
the power stroke of a Spark-ignition engine.

 Geometry of the connecting rod will be modeled using modeling

software(SOLID WORKS) The generated model is then taken into ANSYS 16.0
 The loads and boundary conditions that were calculated will be applied on the
ANSYS 16.0 during Pre-Processing
Literature review:
 Adnan Ali Haider et.al This analysis shows the importance of the solution of the connecting rod
deformation in view of the changes in materials at the most important variants of the stress. This
variant is frequently overlooked and primary importance is analyzed with the strength.
 J.D.Ramani et.al has done analysis of connecting rod and get idea of stress producing during
compressive and tensile loading. And then give idea about weight reduction opportunities for a
production steel connecting rod
Materials used
1.STAINLESSSTEEL

FORCES ACTING ON CONNECTING ROD
 (i) Force on the piston due to gas pressure.
 (iii) Force due to friction of the piston rings and of the piston.

(ii) Force due to inertia of the connecting rod and reciprocating mass.

Solid Works Modelling
 SolidWorks is a solid modeler, and utilizes a parametric feature-based approach which was initially
developed by PTC (Creo/Pro-Engineer) to create models and assemblies. The software is written on
Parasolid-kernel.
 Parameters refer to constraints whose values determine the shape or geometry of the model or
assembly. Parameters can be either numeric parameters, such as line lengths or circle diameters, or
geometric parameters, such as tangent, parallel, concentric, horizontal or vertical, etc. Numeric
parameters can be associated with each other through the use of relations, which allows them to
capture design intent.
 Design intent is how the creator of the part wants it to respond to changes and updates. For example,
you would want the hole at the top of a beverage can to stay at the top surface, regardless of the
height or size of the can. SolidWorks allows the user to specify that the hole is a feature on the top
surface, and will then honor their design intent no matter what height they later assign to the can
SOLID WORKS MODEL
ANALYSIS IN ANSYS

 ANSYS Mechanical is a Workbench application that can perform a variety of

engineering simulations, including stress, thermal, vibration, thermo-electric, and
magneto static simulations. A typical simulation consists of setting up the model
and the loads applied to it, solving for the model's response to the loads.
 As i mentioned in the introduction that connecting will face both tensile and
compression loads .We are doing the both
i) Compression load at piston
ii) Compression load at crank
iii) Tensile load at piston
iv) Tensile load

Conclusion
 From the above work it is clear that stain less steel can with stand more shear and
stresses
 Alluminium also can be taken as material for connecting rod as compared to other
projects it can with stand more than stainless steel
 So,the carbon steel and stain less steel has greater factor of safety but as it increases the
weight of the product so it is not effective.
