Rizal enters to Ateneo
On June 10, 1872 Jose, accompanied by
Paciano, went to Manila. Rizal took the entrance examinations in College of San Juan de Letran but instead he enrolled at Letran he and Paciano went to Ateneo de Manila. At first Father Magin Ferrando, who was the College registrar refused to admit him for two reasons: 1. he was late for registration. 2. he was sickly and undersized for his age. Jesuit system of education It more advance than other schools. They had mass every morning. They develop students discipline towards school. Students divided into two groups. “ Roman Empire” consisting of internos (boarders) “ Carthaginian” composed of externos (non boarders). The best student in each empire called emperor,tribune,decurion,centurion,standar d bearer. Rizal first year in Ateneo Rizals first professor was Fr. Jose Bech,. Rizal was an externo at that time. In his first week he became an emperor. He was the brightest student in class. To improve his Spanish Rizal took private lesson in Santa Isabel College during break time. Summer vacation He did not enjoy his vacation because his mother was in prison. He went to her mother without telling his father. When the summer ended he went back to Manila for his second year. Second year in Ateneo As always Rizal always on the top of the class, again he became an emperor. At the end of the school year Rizal receive excellent grades and gold medal, he return to Calamba for Vacation. Prophecy of mother’s release Her mother was very happy to know that her favorite child was making such splendid progress in school. Rizal told her mother that she would be release from prison in three months time. When the time come, Rizal prophecy became true. Doña Teodara happily back Calamba. Teenage interest in reading He got interested in reading romantic novels. His first favorite novel was The Count of Monte Cristo. He read not only fiction but also non fiction. Third year in Ateneo Rizal returned to Ateneo for his Junior year. As always Rizals grades remains excellent in all subject, but he only won one medal-= in Latin. He failed to win the medal in Spanish because he was beaten by a Sapaniard. Fourth year in Ateneo He went back to Manila for his fourth year. He became an interno this time. Father Francisco de Paula Sanchez his favorite teacher inspires him to study harder and write poetry. Inspired by Fr. Sanchez, Rizal resumed his studies with vigor and vest, he topped all his classmates in all subjects and won five medals. Last year in Ateneo After the summer vacation, Rizal returned to Manila for his last year. He became the brilliant Atenean of his time. Graduation with highest honor He graduated at the head of his class. He graduated with highest honor. Extra curricular in Ateneo He was an active member of a religious society, the Marian Congregation. He was a devotee of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. He was also a member of Academy of Spanish Literature, this academy is exclusive for those who is gifted in literature and sciences. Sculptural works in Ateneo Rizal has an artistic talent in carving, he carve an image of the Virgin Mary on a piece of Batikuling (Philippine hardwood). Fr. Lleonart requested Rizal to carve an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The old Jesuit was highly pleased by his work. The image was still in Ateneo and placed it on the door of their dormitory and it remains for many years. Poems Written in Ateneo Rizals first poem wrote during his days in Ateneo was Mi Primera Inspiracion (My first inspiration), it was dedicated to his mother. First romance of Rizal Segunda Katigbak, Rizals first tragic romance. Theirs was indeed a love at first sight Rizal had for Segunda. This time they also found out that his mothers eyes started to fail CHAPTER 5 Mothers opposition to higher education After Rizal graduated to Ateneo, Rizal had to go to UST for higher studies. The Bachelor of Arts during Spanish times was equivalent only to the high school and junior high school this time. Both his father and Paciano wanted him to go to UST but his mother didn't want to because she knew what happened to Gomburza. Rizal enters the University Rizal took the course on Philosophy and letters. This are two reasons why he enrolled this course: 1. his father like it. 2. he was still uncertain as to what career to pursue. During this term Fr. Rector advice Rizal to study medicine. Finishes surveying course in Ateneo He also studied in Ateneo to took the vocational course leading to the title of perito agrimensor(expert surveyor) Rizal passed the test for surveying course but he did not get the title at that time because he is still underage. The title issued him on November 25, 1881. He still visits Ateneo because of his loyalty. Romances with other girls He meet Miss L, but it did not last long because of two reasons: 1. the sweet memory of Segunda was still fresh in his heart. 2. his father did not like the family of Miss L. He meet Leonor Valenzuela, he sent her love notes written in invisible ink, this ink consisted of common table salt and water. He also meet Leonor Rivera. Victim of Spanish officers brutality Rizal was wounded because their was this Guardia Civil with a snarl and he whipped out his sword and brutally slashed the latter on the back. The wound was not that serious but it was painful. To the Filipino youth Rizal submitted his poem entitled A La Juventud Filipina to the literary contest. He won the said contest and he receive a silver pen, feather shape and decorated with a cold ribbon. The council of the God’s The artistic literary Lyceum opened another literary contest. Many writers participated in the contest. Rizal won the said contest. The winning allegory of Rizal was a literary masterpiece based on the Greek classics. Rizals visit to Pakil and Pagsanjan In summer when he was still a medical student, Rizal went on a pilgrimage to the town of Pakil, famous shrine of Birhen Maria de los Dolores. He was acoompanied by her sister, Saturnina, Maria, Trinidad and their female girls. They were fascinated by the famous turumba, the people had a street dance during the procession in honor of the miraculous Birhen Maria de los Dolores. They went to Pagsanjan for two reasons: 1. it was the native town of Leonor Valenzuela. 2. they want to see the world famed Pagsanjan Falls. Champion of Filipino students In 1880 he founded a secret society of Filipino students in the UST called Compañerismo(Comradeship), the members were called” Comapions of Jehu”. He was the chief of this secret students society. He lead them to combat againts Spain students in various street fights. Unhappy days at the UST There are three reasons why he is not happy at UST. 1. the Dominican professors were hostile to him, 2. the Filipino students were racially discriminated against Spaniards, 3. the method of teaching was obsolete and repressive. Decision to study abroad Rizal decided to study in Spain. Rizal did not seek his parents permission and blessings to go abroad.
