CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
BRIEF OVERVIEW
Mosquito repellents are important to public health tools for the prevention of
infectious diseases (Hebbalkar et al., 1992)
According to Kumaravel et al. (2009), lemongrass is very popular and used for
medicinal, food and insect repellent products. Lemongrass is mainly found in tropical
Asia in countries such as India, Ceylon, Brazil, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar,
New Guinea, Madagascar and countries in Africa and South America. In the
Philippines, it has a local name known as “tanglad”.
According to Noosidum et al. (2008), the repellent properties of plants to mosquitoes
and other pest insects were well known before the advent of synthetic chemicals.

Discussion
The result of the research depends on what variables were used. The negative control have a 0 mean of
repellency, there is a 9.67 mean for the positive control and the Lemongrass has a 2.67 mean of repellency. It
has a great significance when it comes to repellency of negative control than the lemongrass scented candles.
For the mortality, the negative control which is an ordinary candle has a mortality mean of 0.000; the positive
control has a mean of 10 and the lemongrass has a mean of 9.67.
The analysis of our results shows that the positive control and the lemongrass were both effective when
it comes to the repellency rate of the mosquitoes. For the mortality it shows that the mosquito killer (positive
control) is more effective than the ordinary candle (negative control) and lemongrass scented candle. This
only shows that lemongrass scented candle can be an effective alternative for commercial mosquito
repellents.
CHAPTER 5
Conclusions and Recommendations
Conclusion
The result of this study shows that the lemongrass (C. citratus) extract scented
candle does have strong repellency against mosquitoes. The hypothesis was right.
Lemongrass can repel mosquitoes away and it may be used as an effective organic
substitute for commercial mosquito repellent.
Lemongrass was found to be as effective alternative compared to commercial
mosquito repellent in terms of mortality rate and repellency rate, however, many
people are too sensitive to the chemicals to use it as repellent. Lemon grass is an
edible herb, non-toxic, smells great and was considered safe for it does not contains
harmful chemicals compared to commercial mosquito repellent.
Recommendations
Lemongrass can be used as natural mosquito repellent. Test the lemongrass oil extracts in some of
mosquito repellent.
1. The usage of the material or ingredient should be improve or develop for its greater effects
not just to repel but to kill mosquitoes.
2. This can help a lot of people in the community, especially those that are far from the city at
the same time it can be source of income.
3. Lastly, it can help as a guide for the future researchers if applicable. Only if the study focuses
on mosquito repellences and the main ingredient to conduct the study is the lemongrass
extract oil.
