POISON CONTROL CENTERS
A specialized unit providing information on prevention, early diagnosis and
treatment of poisoning and hazard management.

Most of the developed and many developing countries have well established
poison control centers with
Poisons information service
Patient management facility
Analytical laboratory
NOTE: Apart from health benefit to the community PCC also helps in reducing
health expenditure.
Each dollar spend on PCC in America reduced health expenditure cost by
$ 7-15
HOSTORY
In 1930s Louise Gdalman established a frame work for fist PCC at St.
Luke’s Hospital
A pharmacist in Missouri launched a poison prevention campaign in 1950
First Poisoning centers were established in 1950s in America & Europe.
Presently many industrialized countries have established such centers

GOALS
 To provide comprehensive, accurate and timely information to client
 TO enhance medical care of patient

FUNCTIONS/ROLE

PCC has to play a diverse role depending upon the community it serves
 Provision of toxicological information and advice
 Management of poisoning cases
 Provision of laboratory analytical services
 Toxicovigilance activities for poison prevention
 Research, and education and training in the prevention and treatment of
poisoning.
 Developing contingency plans for chemical disasters, monitoring the
adverse effects of drugs, and handling problems of substance abuse.
 Should maintain good working relationship with other health providers to
ensure maximum benefit to society

STATUS
 Should be officially recognized by Govt authorities
 Should operate independently
 Should have a governing body to provide policy guide lines and funding
 Should ensure confidentiality of data it handles
 Information shall be provided free of charge especially in emergencies

Requires a multidisciplinary team of experts headed by a physician
with experience in toxicology. Other members may include

 Analysts
 Pharmacists
 Veterinarians, and other scientists

ROLE OF PHARMACIST IN POISON CONTROL & MANAGEMENT
Pharmacy is a profession largely associated with best possible use of medicines
for the benefit of the patient and community and to minimize adverse and
toxic effects

PREVENTION OF POISONING
Some of the important role in prevention may include

 Information on labels
 Dose and schedule calculation of medicines
 Patient education about proper use of drugs
 Monitoring of therapy
 Information about use of OTC
 At drug/poison control center providing necessary information about
proper use of medicines online/ telephone to community
 Can help community through awareness programs related to incidents of
poisoning and their control
POISON CONTROL CENTERS
ROLE IN THE MANAGEMENT OF POISONING
(PCC)
 Can guide patient/family members on phone about first aid in case
 of poisoning

 Can help in identifying the nature of poison from signs and symptoms
based on his knowledge of clinical pharmacy

 Being trained in analytical and medicinal chemistry he can identify


the ingested poison
by gross examination and
by chemical analysis
 Provides accurate drug therapy for the patient
 Incase the ingested poison is not common a pharmacist serves as
knowledge store to provide information about the poison

 Timely availability and selection of proper antidote


 Follow up to ensure proper use of medicines at home/work place
where poisoning has occurred
