Cell Structure

and Function

JHUN DARVEN M. AGBAY

INTRODUCTION
All organisms are Cells vary in size and
composed of structural structure as they are
and functional units of
life called specialized to perform
“cells” different functions.
The Cell theory
Antonie van
leeuwenhoek

-Invented the
microscope.
Robert hooke
First used the word “cell”
in the 1665.
By looking at a cork with a
simple microscope he
found what appeared to
be blocks of building
material and small
compartments making up
the cork.
Antonie van
leeuwenhoek
-1672, He observed
bacteria, sperm cells,
and red blood
corpuscle, all of
which were cells.
Robert hooke
The term today
describes a microscopic
unit of life that
separates itself from its
surroundings by a thin
partition, the cell
membrane.
Robert brown
1831, an Englishman
observed that all cells
had a centrally
positioned body which
he termed the nucleus
Rudolf virchow
(1821-1902) A German
Pathologist, famously
wrote
“omnis cellula e cellula”
“all cells come from
other cells”
The cell theory
In 1838 M.J. Schleiden
& Theodore Schwan
Formulated the cell
theory
The cell theory
Maintains that all
organisms are
composed of cells, it is
the structural and
functional unit of life,
and cells arise from pre-
existing cells.
The cell theory

Also states that cells

vary considerably, in
shape and size.
The cell theory
-Nerve cells of
animals have long
extensions.
-Muscle cells are
elongated in shape.
The cell theory
-Egg of an ostrich is
the largest cell
(75 mm)
- Some plant cells
have thick cell walls.
